Subject: Differences in gasoline?
IP: Logged

Message:
Does anyone have real proof (or real strong opinions) regarding the best brand of gasoline?

I have been buying most of my gas at the newer larger grocery stores (HEB, Sams, Randals, etc - Houston area). They have the best prices and have octane ratings of 87 for regular and 93 for super unleaded. (I was in Lubbock Texas not long ago and their Regular was only 85 octane and the super unleaded was only 89 octane.)

I personally have not been able to tell a difference between these fuels (bought at the grocery store) and gas(es) I have got at Chevron, Exxon, Shell, etc.

I have never had a "ping" problem with my engine. However, I know that some people say that their engine "pings" with some brands of gas and not with others. Is this necessarily evidence of a better gas (if it doesn't cause an engine to ping)?

Also, I've heard that Chevron gas has better cleaners in them. Does anyone have any real input regarding the effects on/conditions of the internal engine parts caused by different gas?

I'm very picky about the oil and filter I use. I guess I should be equally concerned about the quality of gas.

Thanks

Bill

When I used to road race and autocross my Honda, I found that Mobil Super Unleaded(93 octane) was better than Texaco Super Unleaded(93 octane). I would get a little bit of engine knock out of the Texaco gas, but didn't have that problem with the Mobil gas. But, I do know that since then, Texaco has improved their gas quality, and I use either now i9n my Dakota... just depends on which one is closer at the time...

I do only use Mobil Super in my 71 Chevelle, just because I've never had any problems with their gas in my hi-compression SB Chevy.

Chevron used to make my Maxima clatter like crazy. Eventhough Ive also heard of their cleaners. I usually can tell a difference with different cars. What works for one might not work well for another. Go figure.

76 is no longer the offical fuel sponsor of NASCAR. I don't know when this is ocurring, or if it has already happened. I read about it in Road and Track a couple of issues back.

60 minutes ran a program a few years back...

It showed the 4 major oil companies all filling up their trucks from the same depot by long range camera's.

They ended the program by saying "Now do you really think there is a difference in the gas you use or do you just think there is?"

well as of this year 76 is still the official fuel of nascar, next year yes you are right, there will be a new official fuel of nascar which is a shame cuz 76 did good since the 50s.

and who else do u know who has 100 race gas at the pump, 76 rocks. it blows all the other gas companys away. it contains no MTBE!! some people claim they have gotten better MPG because of that!!

Black RT is right, I have seen a similar program about fuel companies, the fuel is basically the same, it is sometimes altered for winter blends, but thats about it. It all comes from the same pipeline.

the gas is the same. the only thing different is the octane level and the additives put into it. oil is oil. but its what the oil companys put into it that make it better. basically you get what you pay for. 76 is way better than arco. why? because 76 has a thing called pro power a gasoline addivtive that helps keep the fuel system cleaner and will make it last longer.
it cracks me up seeing brand new lexus and bmw and mercedes at a arco to save 10cents. i laugh inside. if only they knew what they were doing to there cars inside.

the gas companies use a different formula to rate octane then what was used in the 60s-early 70s.
this in turn gives gas a higher octane rating on a poorer quality of gas.[in other words super now-would be regular then=90-94 reg then, super now,
98-102 super then,racing gas now]
anyone whos run a muscle car during the 60s-70s knows that you could get mid-high teens fuel mileage out of a big block-now we think if i can get 17-21 out of our v6s-v8s and some 4cyl were doing well.

so what gives here-the feds told the gas com to get the lead out!but in turn they put MTBE in[which one is the lesser of two evils?]

i don,t have the time to go into depth but it boils down to this, one drop of yester years gas produced more power then the same amount of todays gas-in other words you may need 1 1/2 gallons of todays gas to produce the same amount of power of 1 gallon of yester years gas-just for example

hope this helped some.
