Will going from say 235's to say 285's hurt my 0-60 times? I figure wider tires would give better traction, but what will it hurt.

No this is not a physics question, well maybe it is,

Just curious

Wider tires will help grip better, I even thought about doing this. If your going to do it to all 4 sets be careful not to get it too wide your your front wheels will hit the fender well if they're too wide. I have an R/T w/ 9" tires but if I want better traction I might put 10-11" on the rear but keep the same rims.

Do not forget that HEAVIER tires (higher moment of inertia) have a significant impact on accelleration.

There is a formula that the 1/4 milers use for wheel/tire weight but I cannot recall it now.
(someting like a 10th for every LB of tire weight saved)

Suffice that any weight that has to be "spun up" has a MUCH MORE SIGNIFICANT impact on accelleration than just vehicle weight. (again... moment of inertia)

Im not sure about tire weight... but I know every 100 pounds slows your vehicle by a 10th of a second in the quarter...

Yeah, but this is the TIRE, not being carried, but actually spun.

I know we have a physics teacher on here, where is he when we need him!!

Factors that would possibly slow it down:
Tire diameter (including stretch)
Rolling resistance increases
Weight increases, most notably unsprung weight

However, if you're lighting the smaller tires up easily these factors will most likely be outweighed by an increase in traction.

Yeh, the formula is 100 pounds of static weight is good for a thenth of a second in the 1/4 mile, and 10 pound of rotating mass is equal to 100 pounds of static mass. So anthing from motor internals, driveshaft, axle, to the wheels and tires is worth it's weight times ten. This is a big factor why even though AWDs get great traction the added rotating weight an AWD system adds will ultimately lower 1/4 mile times over an equally equiped RWD. That said if you have a traction problem, and go to a wider but no taller tire, I bet you don't actually end up adding more then a few pounds, but may be able to pick up a few 1/10's in your 60 ft time. If ultimate speed in a straight line is important, then the skinniest, lightest wheel and tire on the front is the ticket, as even if the front is not driven directly by the motor, it's weight still counts as rotating mass as it has to be accelerated (unless you can carry a wheelie through the 1/4 mile!).

Going a tad thicker won't add that much more weight, plus that extra weight will help add to a better launch cuz of the added thickness. Couple inches thicker shouldn't even take off .05 of a second, it would probably help your time cuz of the faster launch. U're factoring in all that added weight will take off a tenth of a second....but think about this, your probably saving a whole second when you usually spinning the tires.

(Hersbird)Thanks for the formula...WOW multiply witght times 10!! A VERY good reason to go with the lightest possible wheels.

I wonder if NON steel-belted tires would save enough weight (times 10) to be of any help?

I think wider tires is slower.....well only in my case i have a 3.9 with R/T rims on and i have a 275/55/17 and i noticed a big difference in a accelleration slower in case you didnt notice. On a R/T or a V8 i would think wider would be much better do to the ruber contact with the ground less spin = more traction.

jdpower- I bet you also ended up with a taller tire as well, which effectively lowers torque put to the ground. The R/T wheels and tires are also at least 5-10 pounds heavier each. That's equal to .2-.4 seconds in the 1/4. I bet you didn't have a traction problem before the wheel change, so you had nothing to gain from it. Also, I bet it looks much better now!

With all that said, Sounds like Wider is better, not to quote another auto-maker ;-)
