Subject: 5-speed w/ 5.9L swap?
IP: Logged

Message:
I am planning on swapping my 3.9L on my '93 4x4 and was wondering if I can keep my 5-speed tranny. I know it'll bolt up, but will it handle the torque and power of the 360 if I change the clutch and flywheel? I don't see why switching them with racing or high performance versions wouldn't work. Also, would regearing be a consideration? I'd appreciate any info.

i cant really answer your quest. but i'm swapping out the 4cyl in my 92 dak for a hi-po 360 and i'm going with an old muscle car type A833 4spd tranny for it's shear stength and durability, but the guy at Schumacher Creative Services (where i ordered the engine swap mounts from) said he's put those 5spd trannys behind the V8s before and hasnt had a problem.

I was told by a computer tech that came to my office that he had a 1998 Dakota with the 5.9L (360) and 5-speed. But I don't know if it was the same 5-speed as in the 3.9L and 4.7L or not.

would switching it with one from the 4.7 be something to consider? is it any different than the one on my 3.9?

The 5-speed in all Dakotas is the NV-3500 and it is not rated for over 300 ft-lbs of input torque. It may last, but it's not designed to last. It's probably more then just a better clutch, actually putting a better clutch with more 'bite' is likely to increase the chance of failure. Put a few mods on a 360, a good clutch, some sticky drag radials and your bound to break something. The nv-3500 also has a 71% deeper first gear ratio then a 46RE automatic. That means if you had a 310 ft-lbs of rear wheel torque and 3.92 gears you would apply 2977 ft-lbs with the automatic (not really because of stall speed, and torque converter slippage) and 4241 ft-lbs with the 5-speed (which can be launched right at peak torque). So you see you are also increasing the chance of driveshaft and axle failure. The Rams with 360 and 5-speeds get the NV-4500 and Dana 60 rear ends to handle it.

Eventually, I would like to do a solid axle swap that will replace the rear end with a Ford 9 inch, which would definitely hold up. Then, I would like to go with custom driveshafts.
But, if I go with the NV-4500, would I be able to keep the NP-231 transfer case? Replacing the motor, tranny, AND transfer case isn't really in my budget. If I do, would I be better off taking all three off a junked Ram 4x4? If so, what other problems, if any, will I run into by putting them in the smaller truck? Anyhow, I appreciate the info.
