Subject: Intercooler with supercharger?

Does anyone have any problems with heat and super chargers? I was reading about intercoolers, is there any danger of running 6#'s in 110 degree TX heat without an intercooler?

with what engine? 110 degree texas heat in houstan traffic with any FI application will more then likely cause overheating problems without extra provisions.

A intercooler is a good idea anywhere. Cooler air more hp. Gotta like that.

I haven't had mine through a Texas summer yet, but I can tell you when it rains that thing gets scary...

So what can a person do to cool it down with a super charger on it?

Viper6: I've been running my Powerdyne for well over a year at 10# boost (in the Austin, TX heat). If you run anything above 6# boost, install a Boost Bypass Valve...this helps prevent excess heat build up (due to boost "buildup").

On the intercooler, don't bother with an Air to Air as they're not very efficient at lower speeds. Liquid to Air is the best way to go but are much more expensive. Myself and my partner built a home-brew heat exchanger (yes, Home Depot parts) using copper tubing, a small pump, and some other items (it's a liquid heat exchanger)...and it dropped my intake air temp 35 degrees from without it. Spearco makes some excellent Liquid to Air intercoolers...i'm looking into a custom one as I write this.

If you can keep the intake charge at or below 100 degrees...and under full boost...you'll be less prone to detonation as well as will make more power.

Monitor the EGT to determine when boost levels are getting too high. This is STANDARD PROCEDURE when boosting an engine with pressureized intake charge.

EGT= ExhaustGasTemperture

EGT works great on Turbos...Superchargers need to monitor the intake charge.

6-9# is "ok" without an intercooler...anything higher would require one. Running an intercooler on a 6-9# system will help, but not as noticeable on the 6-7# boost level.

Bernd.......

I was in another post the other day, when CW said that either you were affiliated with Speed Tweeks or worked for them....Any how I have a question for you. Are y'all working on any TURBO single or twin for the 4.7?

Very interested in any info.....
If not, and they are in need of a test vehicle for a little research and development, I've got a 2000 reg cab with the 5-spd and 3:92's. It just turned 5,000 miles. I want to do something pretty quick. If there's no hope for a TURBO, or it's going to cost ungodly amounts to get one custom fabbed, I'll just S/C....

Appreciate the help....

Yes, we're working on the 4.7L (Single/Hybrid) turbo system with Liquid-Air intercooler. The only set back we've had so far is getting the local shop opened up. Otherwise, we're on schedule. (Single Turbo for the V6 is also in the works at the same time).

Price range will be about $3500-$3800 (the same as a Supercharger).

Hehehehe...yeah, I "work" for SpeedTweaks. (Actually, i'm the owner). ;)
