I've been considering a K&N filter or intake kit for my dakota - its a 98 2.5L with a 5 speed manual. This winter is the first time I've driven it in cold weather in an area with hills - I used to live on flat ground. I notice that when the temp. is below 30 or so, the truck seems like it has alot more power - presumably this is because of air density, and flow volume, etc. I've been wondering how much difference a K&N filter would make, and how much more difference an intake kit (Marty at KRC makes custom ktis for the 2.5) would make. I would love to be able to make as much power all the time as I make when its cold. Can anyone tell me if the K&N filter is worth $50, or do I need to go on and get an intake kit to see this kind of power all the time?

the k&n air filter for 50 bucks wont show much difference at all if there even are any. But if u replace the whole intake system you will notice power gains. I put a filter on my 4.7 and not alot happened i will soon be replacing the entire intake system.

I sent an email to K&N to find out if there is any problem with the K&N kits in cold climates. Living in Canada, we usually have long, cold winters and one performance shop I was talking to was concerned about the high volume of cold air affecting fuel mixture under cold conditions.
I have an email sent to K&N for a response.

I have been on the K&N site and they don't show Fuel Injection Performance Kit (FIPK)for the 4.7 engine. I believe K&N made the same unit that is in the Mopar performance catalogue but again, nothing for the 4.7. I aslo asked for a 4.7 part number in my email to K&N. If anyone has a part number please let me know.

Maybe some of the northern folk can let us know their experience with high flow intake kits in cold weather.

Cheers ..... Audie, from Ontario
