Ok...it's not quite Dakota/Automotive related, but my new home machine needs some "tweaking" on the memory side. For all you computer "overclocking" gurus...this is new territory for me (processor wise...not computer wise).

AthlonXP 1700+ on DDR EPOX 8KHA+ MB. Currently has unbuffered 512MB DDR PC2100 Stick but hear that the registered is better. Any thoughts, opinions, suggestions, recommendations?

Dakota content: All data logging, computer dyno simulations, and other pertinent data are stored on this machine...not to mention my email. ;)

If i remember correctly, when you overclock the processor it will also run some extra juice through the ram as well. It used to be on the T-Birds you could use a pencil to connect a trace and it would work, but i believe you may need an OCing kit for the XP processor. This is a piece of scotch tape with a very small gauge wire on it. I think this can be made at home. Last i heard someone wanted $25 or so for this piece of magic tape. After you have "unlocked" the processor you are free to go into the bios and raise the voltage running through the core, this should inturn start to speed things up. Just remember to go small steps at a time and watch your temps. If you go to high it will most likely become unstable.
Out of curiousity, did you buy that processoror were you one of the lucky ones that won one?

I heard you clouldn't overclock the Athalon processor because they run very warm as is.

The thunderbird is a different animal than the XP. The XP is part of the palamino line, which runs much cooler than the t-birds. As far as I know the main limiting factor is the frontside bus speed. You may not go faster than the front side. I had cooling issues on my t-bird 1.2 not being overclocked so now I am water cooled. Right now my temp is 109, kinda high because i've got some programs running.

Thanks people. Got it all worked out and the AthlonXP 1700+ is running at 88 degrees at normal clock and 95-96 at 150x12 on bus and clock multiplier.

DaveR: I grabbed the CoolerMaster Copper CPU fan...it works much better than the Volcano6U+ and helped drop the temp about 10 degreed on the CPU.

Overclocking can sometimes be less stable, why would you want to have your machine that has all your store stuff to be overclocked? Just be sure to keep that temp down, heh. My machine resets it's self sometimes, but I don't care, I save often...

"I heard you clouldn't overclock the Athalon processor because they run very warm as is."

No, they are VERY OCable, but yes they do run warm, the Athlons and TBirds could fry themselves in less than 10 seconds without a heatsink..

This is a big name one too, www.hardocp.com.

Bernd, you could do a water cooling system, runs cold water over the proccessor (in a tube of course)...and yes registerd DDR is faster (plus you can pack more ram on to your board...check the specs.) Overclocking is based on jumpers (software or hardware) on the motherboard...some mobos are better for overclocking...others are not. Start low, then graduate up, but remember that the higher the voltage, the more chances for errors.

heya why overclock a computer that is going to login data and so forth. dont you want the data to be correct? well overclocking your computer to the point it is unstable and shuts down means that its making errors in calculations and isnt accuraly performing so what your using the comp for the xp1700 w/ 512 ddr should do fine. put it back to normal. thought you would like to know.
(athol t-bird 1.4 oc to 1.53 stable w/ cooper h/sink and oc 2.53 p4 to 2.6 but hard to oc compared to t-birb :( k im done)
