Well,

I'm the proud father of a new 98 Dodge Dakota 2WD V6 3.9L

I love it so far but so far everyone has told me that its a real gas guzzler, I was wondering if thats true? I really know nothing about vehicles.
I also heard that I can get more MPG if I throw a topper on the back, is tht true also?

Thanks!
Nic

A new happy Dakota owner.

I own a 4x4 98 Dakota w/ 3.9L. I have close to 50K on it I have a K&N, and Flowmaster one inlet dual outlet, 2 3/4" pipes. My drive to work is about 40 miles on a 45 mph road I usualy run about 50mph. I average about 19to 22 mpg. In the city I usually get 16 to 18 mpg. The K&N, and the Flowmaster has helped alot so far. My engine has better throttle response, and improved gas mileage. If you are not geting 19 to 22 on the open road this might be just a couple of suggestions that would maybe better you situation.

My 1998 Dakota EXT 3.9 auto delivers 18 in city, 23 highway (70 mph) no topper or cover.

Not exactly a gas mizer, but fair enough.

The only thing that has improved MPG on my '02 QC is a K&N air filter. I'd like to get a tonneau cover, I had one on my old Ranger and loved it (the cover NOT the truck :P )

Anything to reduce wind drag in the bed will help. I went with the tonneau (for looks). Have not done any performance mods yet, so can't offer any advice in that area.

First thing I did was change the muffler to a less restrictive one and added a drop-in K&N.
I also put in NGK plugs, brass insert cap, and 8.8 wires at the first tune-up.

If you get an automatic forget about good gas mileage. I have a five speed, regular cab, and average 25 mpg

Good truck.

If you want to improve your fuel economy, then check out AMSOil.com. I'm sure you all have heard about it on this site and I'm here to tell you that every bit of it is true. I converted my air-filter, oil-filter, oil, rear-end, and tranny fluid over to AMSOil and have seen 23 MPG on the highway cruising at 70 mph, granted my tailgate is down.

Tonneau covers also help out a lot as well as improved exhaust. But here is the kicker that a majority of people don't know about...tire pressure. If you keep up with your tire pressure, then you will see significant results in fuel economy.

Are you serious, I have seen 23 also, but that's with my foot off of the pedal, droppin speed on the Hwy. Are you sayin you average 23 after the changeover to amsoil?? if so, what were you gettin before??
I have been thinkin of goin to Amsoil too, I got a 2000/4.7 4x4 on 31's andI now get 14.2 avg(u.s.) I currently use Shell 100% syn in the engine only and dino in the rest.

Yeah I'm serious. I wouldn't lie to you all. :) Before the AMSOil switchover, I believe I was getting around 19-20 on the hwy. In the city, I get around 15-16 mpg. I live in Nashville, TN so you have to account for all the steep hills here.

Another thing you have account for Dally is that you have a 4x4. It's a little heavier than 4x2 and plus your tires may not be helping any either...not too sure if tire height affects gas mileage. But AMSOil is definitely a must get item in my book. Improved gas mileage and once a year oil changes...saves you a lot of money in the long run.

Are y'all taking into consideration the fact that those big ole tires don't register as many miles on the speedo making you think that you're gettin worster gas mileage?

No, they're the factory size for this particular truck Vic. It's a Sport model with the tire & wheel pkg. So the speedo reads accurate. there is 5280 feet in a mile right? if so then were all good.
I just learned today that I can buy Amsoil at Peavey mart now, used to be only available through the Distributor guy. Wooooeee.

Yes, the 5280 figure is valid, but only in the northern hemisphere.
