So do I take the rubber gasket off the old thermostat and put on the new one or is the rubber gasket on the housing?

I have done the swap on two daks and none of the parts stores ever seem to have the correct gasket. I usually just look through what they have and seem to find one that fits. It would be really helpful to have the old one but both times i had to scrape the old one off thus destroying it. NAPA can always get what i need but they never have it on-hand. You might also be able to use RTV but I'm not sure Good luck

I think geoff is refering to the older magnums like the 5.2. The new thermostat should come with the rubber gasket attached to it. I have never put in a Robert Shaw therm. but I have done a few stock replacements.

I have the 4.7. reuse the rubber 0-ring seal from the old t-stat, just slips on over the new one. look for and match up the notch on the gasket to notch on housing. dont overtighten the bolts to housing, be carefull.
