i have a 99 dakota 5.2 auto that has been running rich since i bought it at 3000 mi.
i have been through 4 cats. i less than 30,000 mi.
the dodge tech have checked "everything" that could be causing this, they blame it on the fuel.
however i have tried different brands with no change still bad odor in exhaust fuems. yet noone i know with the same engine has this problem. is there anything i might be able to do- ex. cooler\hotter plugs. better ignition system. any help would be greatly appreciated.

I dont know if this is on the right track, but what about intalling the IAT relocator, then setting the temp reading HIGHER than the outside temp?

The engine running rich could be caused by a number of different things.
Here are some off the top of my head.

Bad Oxygen sensor.
Bad computer
Bad airflow sensor
Bad IAT
Incorrect Fuel Injectors

The warranty for emissions devices runs longer than the factory warranty for other parts, length depends on model year, I think. Do you have emissions testing in your area? If so, get the state involved. Tell them that the dealer won't fix the ultimate problem, just keeps changing out the Cat.
Have you contacted the regional rep?
Tell him what they said about the fuel. That has got to be one of the dumbest things to ever come out of any service reps mouth.

The IAT Adjuster won't destroy the cat under normal cruise as the PCM attempts to keep it at a 14.7:1 A/F ratio. Unless you're running the IAT at the 16 degrees mark and floor boarding it all the time, it's not a cause.

Bad Oxygen sensor - Very Possible
Bad computer - Possible, but the last thing to check
Bad airflow sensor - None on the Dodge Truck Systems
Bad IAT - Unlikely
Incorrect Fuel Injectors - Leaking or bad injector (normally trips a code though)

Try www.discountautoparts.com
Great prices and fast delivery.

ty, I had two clogged injectors and gave me the rich running, and exhaust oder, but never tripped a code. It drove me crazy trying to figure it out. Pull them out and check the inlet side.If they are clogged try using some brake parts cleaner to get the junk out. I still ended up ordering new injectors though. Problem solved.

1992 dakota runs ok for a short distance then shuts
off like it runs out of gas. there is a strong odor
and it blows black smoke when it shuts down. takes a
while to start like it is flooded. seems to run fine
until the problem starts but will occur even at
highway speeds. would appreciate any ideas. thanks
