Evening folks!

Have just bought a '99 2.5L Dakota Sport CC (5 speed)and have discovered an issue going uphill here in Cent. Ca.... seems it just doesn't have the "umph" to keep a descently consistant speed. Loses about 15-20 mph on a average grade. (about 30 degree for 1/2 mile.) I was wondering if you knowledgable folks would have any ideas for COST effective mods that a guy with little mechanic knowledge could do to boost this? It was sold to me as is, so warranty issues are no concern. And if it makes a differnce or not, the gas petal seems to not have the resistance I have come to expect when driving various vechicles.

Thanks,
TMG

I have a 99 RC Sport 2.5L and have the same problem. You can make an intake yourself for roughly $50 or search the net for one for around $100. This will help slightly, any parts you find please post.

I have a 2001 2.5 L Dak and I have experienced the lag that you speak of. I did some easy bolt-on power mods, and it help a bunch. The mods I did were changing the muffler to a Flowmaster 40 series Delta, bosch platinum +4 plugs, 180 thermostat, AIRAID intake with a K&N cone, and a Stage 2 Jet Chip. With these mods, i'd venture to say that I have added about 25-30 hp for about $600.I plan on getting a new throttle body soon and I am custom building a cold air intake instead of putting in flood lights. hope this helps ya.

Drive it like you stole it...

I have a 95 2.5 Sport RC w/ 5 spd. and also noticed the lack of power that the engine made so I also made some changes, overall it was worth it and made the truck a lot more fun.

-homemade Gen II FIPK w/ K&N cone filter
-ported factory throttle body
-Mopar Performance cam
-advanced timing
-Bosch +4 plugs & Bosch wires
-Borg Warner brass cap & rotor
-180 Robert Shaw thermostat
-Flowmaster 40 series w/ duals
-removed cat (was clogged anyways)

now it goes and sounds like a 3.9 or more!!

I've got a 95 2.5 and want to make an intake for it. Could you post up on how you made yours? Specifically, what you did to get rid of that vaccum valve in the bottom of the airbox and how you mated the intake to the top of the throttle body.

Dave,

I basically kept the factory intake, only I cut off from the where the air box starts and the accordian like bend ends. I threw away the fact. air box, plate that blocked air from entering thru grill, and accordian tube that leads from the air box to the grill. I removed the vacume valve tubing from the valve cover all the way to the fact. air box and replaced it with a K&N crankcase vent filter on the back of the valve cover where the hard tubing used to lead to. I also removed the fabric like tubing that was on the bottom of the engine that was also part of the PCV system or something. I just left the hole there open, it'll be fine. I did all this with the help of KRC Performance, it's in Cocoa and I'm in Orlando, like an hour away, lucky for me!

Alright so I've almost got it. I have already removed the screen from the the intake at the top of the throttle body.

Now I cut out the airbox, remove the vacuum hose that goes to the valve cover and put a filter on it. I have already ditched that fabric tubing thing. I actually belive that it is a pre-heater hose for cold starts, since it does go the the manifold heat shield. Then I remove the block-off plate from behind the grill.

Now the real problem that I've already had. There is a plate in the airbox. It opens and closes. Hence blocking the flow of air or opening it up. It is operated by vaccum and, if I remember correctly, the vaccum comes hose is connected to the throttle body. One time it became disconnected and triggered the auto-shutdown fuse and the truck died. Do you know what I do to that vaccum line, it's totally separate from the one that goes to valve cover. It is small 1/8" tube. Maybe I'll have to take a photo of it....

Thanks for being so patient with me, Eddie. This is helping me out a lot.

Dave,

So far so good it sounds, that fabric tubing thing is a non issue here in good ol' Florida. I cut off the factory plastic intake right where the ridges/accordian part of the intake ends. You'll find the left over opening will fit perfectly with the biggest K&N cylinderical filter they sell at Discount Auto or Autozone. It cost around $60 bucks and is a perfect fit with the fact. intake. The K&N crankcase vent filter is a special order only from any auto part store. Just measure the flange opening and look in the catalog. The metal screen is a good step, see how restrictive that crap is, there is also a silencer in the fact. intake, remove that along with the grill plastic thing. Keep me posted of your progress, us pre 97 Dak lovers gotta band together!
