Subject: K&N FIPK Problem!!

I installed the FIPK on my 5.9 in early November. I wasn't that impressed with the workmanship, particullary at the crancase vent fitting. It was way out of round and had to be modified with a razor blade to prevent air leaks. That was no big deal.

Anyway, My cone filter has slipped off the end of the air horn several times. I called K & N to ask their advice on a remedy. The Tech said to sand the end of the Air horn (where the cone filter clamps to) with rough sandpaper and that should cure the problem.

I took the air horn off to sand it. While I was doing this, I noticed several gaps/cracks between the metal ring (that sits on the TB gasket) and the plastic air horn. I was able to blow air through these. So, since November, unfiltered air has been entering my engine!!!

I called K & N back, got the same Tech and explained this problem. He stated that they had had some problems like this. He said some people were using JB Weld to fill in the gaps and stop the air leaks.

K & N is shipping me a replacement horn.

It might be a good idea to look at your FIPK to see if you have a similar problem!!!

Yup, this is a pretty known problem with the FIPK. They overnighted me a new tube. This one has a metal ring instead of plastic like my old one.

I guess if it keeps cracking, i'll just keep calling them and getting a replacement.

This is a known problem with the kits. I have been in touch with several people at K&N and I am on my second replacement. The problem was with the manufacturer of the plastic material. It did not hold up. K&N has changed suppliers and have just begun sending out the new ones. I just got the new one and from what I can tell it is physically a little heavier and the plastic is a lot harder. Call K&N and they will overnite a new one.

As far as the filter sliping off, don't be afraid of tightning down with the hose clamp. Filter falling off should not be a problem.

Travis, when did you get yours last. I would get the ones the have now. My first one I got 2 yrs ago had the metal ring. Yours may still be of the old material.

I just received my replacement air tube and it is much heavier and better made than the original. It appears that K&N has solved the air leak issue. Only one problem, it didn't fit without some modifications.

The "air hat" portion of the tube is thicker than the original K&N. So the bolt which holds it on to the TB was not long enough. Also, (becasue of the increased height of the air tube) the heat shield was too low to allow the air tube to fit. I had to get a larger "L" bracket to hold it up about 1.25" higher.

No big deals, just a hassle. I have a call into K&N Tech so they may include these parts (longer bolt and larger L bracket) with the replacement tubes.

I got mine about 2 months ago. It seems to be of much higher quality than the last one.

About the bolt being too short, I thought this too at first. Remember there is a threaded stud (allen scoket) that you install in the TB. Mine was stuck in the bolt and I forgot it was a seperate piece. You have to back the stud out of the bolt and reinstall in the TB. The stud is long enough for the bolt to reach. The other thing was that the whole assembly did sit higher and did not line up with the hole in the heat shield. I had to really crank down on the bolt to compress the hat to bring the tube down to go throught the heat shield. We will see how tough the new plastic is.

My bolt/stud combination was too short when I first installed it. I had to raise the heat shield because the tube was not lining up with the hole.

Well...After the plastic "air hat" heated up (over several days), I believe it "flattened out".

Now I can tighten the bolt until it stops. I also had to lower the heat shield.

I hope it doesn't keep flattening out!!!!!

I'm on my second replacement tube. K&N actually sent me two extras by mistake. I guess I'll have a spare tube for when my current one goes.

I also have had problems with the filter falling off even though the clamp was tight (I thought!).

A better solution is: www.intenseperformance.com
I should have gone with them in the first place.

My filter fell off the air tube twice. I contacted K&N and they said to rough sand (I used 80 grit paper) the very end of the tube where the filter mounts. Also clean any oil off of the inside of the filter mounting surface.

I did this and have not had a problem since.

Hopefully all the hassels that we are going through will improve the product for everyone else.

Hey B.T.
I started off with the Intense Performance setup, and have switched to the K&N Gen II and am much happier with the K&N. The IP uses the stock airhat which is pretty much one big restriction. If you remove the baffles from the stock airhat, you lose some integrity, and take the chance on collapsing the airhat itself. Have used the Stage II and Stage III setups and still like the K&N better. With the K&N you also get a 4" diameter inlet tube as opposed to the 3" tube with the IP and it has a slight bend. It may be slight, but it's still a bend where the K&N is a straight shot.
As far as the K&N cracking...how do yall think I got MY K&N??? Only cost me...NOTHING!! heh heh heh
Good thing they had such shotty workmanship to begin with.
Also used the heat shield from my IP Stage III and fashioned it to the K&N inlet tube with the S&B 9" Bigmouth filter.
Have a K&N Gen II Satge III now. Looks pretty sweet too.
