Ok, here goes a question thats wide open.
My Truck is a 2001 QC 4.7 V8, automatic, not sure on the rear-end.

Besides the intake mod, what else can be done to make it quicker 0-60. Right now I am around 7.4, I want to go faster. I am hearing some pro's and some Con's about cat back stuff. Also are traction bars a good idea, seems really easy to light up the tires, They are stock P255 65's.

Is it realistic to want to push it down into the low 6 second area?

If that's all you care about is going fast why didn't you get the 5.9L, more mods than a 4.7L anyday (unfortunately). Take a look at http://www.speedtweaks.net great place for tips and other cool stuff.

Look in your glove box. There is a label that has your rear end size printed on it. Changem your intake and exhaust to keep things equal.

Since you decided to make the right choice and get a 4.7L motor, here are some things you can do.
1. Change the oil from natural crude to Mobil 1 Synthetic. Lots of arguements here about oil , but trust me. It will free up horsepower and protect your engine.

2. Switch out the silly airhat/intake box arrangement for a cool-air intake with a high flow air filter. There are many. Look at Volant Performance, 360 Air Intakez, G-forced intakes, Intense Performance, or you can cobble one together out of PVC and rubber hose from home Depot.

3. Get a free-flow muffler welded into your stock exhaust system. The stock exhaust manifolds do a great job and nobody has shown really good gains with headers yet, so keep the stockers. If you get a 3" cat-back bolt on kit from FLowmaster or Dynomax etc, it will move your horsepower up into the rpm band where you can't enjoy the torque down low.

4. If you are going to drag race your truck at the strip, the Lakewood bars are worth the $30. If you are only going to drive on the street with street tires, it will still be easy to spin the tires.

5. If you have some money and want a real kick in the pants, buy one of the new Flowmetrics throttlebodies from Speedtweaks or KRC Performance and bolt that on (takes about 20 minutes).

With the cool-air intake, the throttlebody, and the hi-flow muffler in the stock exhaust, there will be a world of difference. If you drive moderately, there will be better MPG, if you drive crazy, these hop-ups will get you more tickets from the cops.

6. If you;ve got more money, you can take out the computer and send it to Mike Leach in California, and he will reprogram it to get you some more horsepower and torque while taking off the top-speed limiter and rev limiter. This is also a big kick in the pants, but you will be without your truck for a few days while your computer is in the Fed Ex.

The stuff listed here will prolly raise 100 more questions, but just read the posts here in the Performance section, go to www.speedtweaks.com, go to krcperformance.com, go to www.fast4x4.net, go to dakota-truck.net and just do some research. People have been working on these Dakotas and how to make them go fast for a few years. There are pictures and how-to's everywhere. The best approach: read up, talk to others, try a few things yourself.

Mike Leach & Company manufacture the headers for Mopar Performance. Ron Zimmer sets up the performance programs for the Mopar HP PCMs. They are associated with each other, i.e., you can send your PCM to Mike Leach to be re-flashed, ~$400 for N/A engines, ~$600 for SC engines. If you buy a Mopar HP PCM the speed limiter is set to 255 along with other changes for fuel tables, rev limits, and shift points (except 45RFE transmissions). Chris as far as speed goes you've got three strikes against you.
1.)A QC auto weighs about 4800lbs
2.)auto trans
3.)you probably have a 3.55 rear
While there are alot of mods that will improve performance and you will get noticable results. Your truck will be quicker than most and faster than some cars, but just keep your goals realistic before spending your cashish. One for sure mod that will improve your milage and looks is a tonneau cover. Caveat Emptor!

chris just do what i did, get a loan, and get a supercharger! :) hehehe i've done everything i can so far. Only thing left for me to do is get my heads ported and polished.... and a new cam, but no one has those yet....

I think you would notice the most improvement going in one of two direction: 1) Reprogramed ECM, larger fuel injectors, cam and forced induction. 2) Reprogramed ECM, Cam, larger injectors and NOS. The exhaust manifolds are fine. They might benifit from some porting and polishing but I would leave them in the system. If you should ever decide to use turbo chargers they will take the heat and weight better then tubular headers. If you decide to go with forced induction then you realy will need to upgrade to larger Cat. converters, tubeing and mufflers and maybe a larger throttle body.
