Subject: Difference between 4.7 and chevy HP

I am kind of confused about the HP numbers difference between a 4.7 and the chevy motors close to the same displacement. The chevy claims 270-285HP and more torque, but the dodge only 235. Even so, I have _never_ seen a chevy accelerate faster than me in our bone stock 4.7 QC 3.55 auto dak. Something seems fishy to me, is there really that big a difference, and if so why. I almost think that dodge is underrating the 4.7. It absolutely blows away the 318 off the line, at least than our 318 ext. cab 1/2 ton which weighs close to the same. It also gets at least 5 mpg more the way I drive, which is usually pretty slow (18.5-21mpg vs 14.5-17).

i think chevy over ratted that engine and dodge under rated the 4.7.

i blew the doors off of one of thoes chevies with my 5.2. they are slow. 285 hp YEA RIGHT!

just wondering, are you compairing your 4.7 to a 5.2 in a 1500 RAM? if so its not a fair compairison.

you would ahve to look at a chart of when each engine hits its peak power and how they are geared. I had a 99 dak with the 5.2 and then I got an 02 with the exact same options and the 4.7 feels alot faster to me.

Chevys weigh more. They are a full size truck. You have to look at the power to weight ratio. That and gearing go a long way in making a vehicle fast.

my friend has a 01 silverado with the 4.8 ratted at 270 HP. i know it weighs a little more than my truck, but it is a dog. no way its at 270 hp unless its a verry steep spike on the dyno.

truckn mag did a compairison on the ram VS chevy. they found out that the dodges were built WAY more solid and used more metal in the frame and suspencion compaired to the chevy. they also said the chevy fullsize and dakota almost weigh the same but not quite.

the best part of the aritcle is, after the compairison. the chevy owner traded in his truck for a dodge douley v10!

I can only speak for the 5.3 Chevy as that is what I drove before the Dakota. I had the 270 HP version ('99). The 5.3 is a higher RPM motor and definitely shows it's power in the higher RPM's. It is definitely faster than the 4.7. I would think that the 4.8 Chevy and the 4.7 Dodge would be very close in performance which makes the Chevy look bad since it's rated at much higher HP than the Dodge.
