I like the look of the 3" side swept, catback
exhaust by gibson, w/ the 4" tip, but what is the
sound/performance like? The catback system
seems pretty cheap, for the performance
gains they suggest. Will it be louder than my 2
chamber flowmaster with the stock pipes? I
want as loud as possible, because I have this
tiny small block! Would it be better If I just
changed my stock pipes to 3" and stick with
the flowmaster?

If you think both gibson and flowmaster are
bad, what would you recomend?

Thanx, D

I have the Gibson single side swept and it's a good exhaust. I bought it because I wanted something fairly quiet but with a better sound quality than stock. This Gibson is only a little louder than stock...just a nice deep mellow tone. If you're looking for something loud, don't buy the Gibson.

Hey Dan,

How hard was the Gibson system to install? Was it just clamp and go? Did you get the Aluminized or the Stainless and how nice does it look?

Gibson installation was a breeze. Taking off the old system was a pain. Pulling off the old muffler after cutting the rear was tough. Needed to make cuts along the tube to release the muffler from the pipe. I have the stainless system. It's more for longevity than looks. The gibson chrome tail end looks great.

Installation could not have been easier: I paid someone else to do it. I watched the entire process up close and the only time the mechanic was swearing was in geting the old one off. I got the stainless as well, simply for longevity.

The only problem that I've had was at the point where the new system met the old...about 9 months after I had it installed I was getting a little rattling noise from that joint. I wrapped some muffler tape around the joint and secured it with an exhaust clamp...no more rattle.

what catback can I get that has the good looks
of the gibson, but the loudness of the
flowmaster? would switching to a single
chamber flowmaster be street/smog legal in
California?

I installed the 3" stainless a couple months
back. The install is simple. The reason the
factory exhaust is a pain is because there is
a small "key" in the top of the pipe (cat
side). I ended up pouding the sh!t out of the
old muffler with a rubber mallet until I saw
the error of my ways. A small dremel tool with
plenty of cut-off wheels is your best friend.

The sound of the exhaust is awesome (when you're
outside the car) and very quiet when you're in
the car (which is the way it should be).

By the way, that 4" tip is not chrome, it is
brushed stainless steel (at least mine was).
