Hersbird,

Do you want to race me? I have a Jeep 5.9 and am in Missoula. I have seen your truck around town and it looks pretty cool. Send me an email (potac@hotmail.com) and we can meet. There is one good spot that I know of and it is not the road out to Lolo.

ok..ive read too much to remain silent. as an avid ex-4x4 owner and proud owner of an r/t i can say that you are comparing cats and dogs. if i ever saw a 98 g.c.5.9 crawling out of the trails, i would cockslap the owner. that is too pretty of a ride to be beating on the trails. lets face it...95% of the 4x4 owners in this country never get off the pavement...the 5.9 g.c. is PERFECT for them. its amazing in the rain, snow, and a helluva lot of fun on dry pavement too. no matter which way you cut it, a jeep will wail on a dakota/durango off-road. solid dana axles, and crawl gears really make a difference...but for those of you who rarely try to flex your suspension, and like playing in the mud/snow, the dakota/durango is a very good choice. if i knew how to post a damned picture up here i'd show you the pic of my 93 cherokee 5 minutes after we got it unstuck from 3' of water. i dont think a kota/durango could drive home after that, to be honest. anyway, i love my r/t, but just like i would never go talk smack to a jeep owner about how i could offroad better than him, the 5.9 g.c. owners shouldnt come up and tell us that they are faster. it just will not happen, not without mods anyway. but should anyone want a FAIR comparison of the best of both worlds, compare the durango r/t 4x4 with the 98 g.c...THAT would be fun.

after reading a few comments on shifting with the daks compared to jeeps. I noticed that my truck shifts kinda ruff aswell. But Would it not be set up like that because the engine and as well the gear ratio, is designed for towing.
so it just automatically shifts like that to make for more effecient towing ? or driving with a payload ? ? regardless if you are towing or not.

i could be way off ... but what do you think ?

Guest, hey where were you a year ago when this thread started? Oh well, you are going to have to race the next owner of the R/T as in about 19 hours it will no longer be mine. I drove my new Ram tonight and the Dakota goes in to Grizzy motors just as soon as I get off work tomorrow. The guy from Missoula Car and Truck came by tonight to see it and would have bought it if I hadn't already finalized all my financing. He thinks Grizzly will sell it to him for an extra $200. Then he will buy the MP PCM I pulled off for hopefilly $150. The guy was really cool from Missoula Car and truck and I wish I had gone to him in the first place. So the yellow R/T should end up staying local.
Now for the new truck, I wish I could line up the new -vs- the old just to see because it's really hard to "feel" the difference between the two. The new truck is a Quad Cab, 2wd Ram, with the Hemi. It has the 3.92 LS and 20" wheels and is just plain huge and high compared to the RC R/T. It doesn't feel fast but when you look down at the speedo it is going fast. You feel the speed more in the R/T so it's tough to tell what truck is actually faster. Also the Ram had all of 7 miles on it and is my truck so I really didn't want to try a full throttle blast from 0-90mph until I get a couple hundered miles on it at least. Also the new Ram is filled with 87 octain which causes the PCM to back off on the timing. It take at least 89 octain to get the rated 345 HP, otherwise I beleive the 5.7 is "only" rated at 330 hp with 89 octain. So more miles and better gas is really needed to be fair. So will 100 more HP be able to offset 1000 more pounds? I don't know, the good thing is that of the 1000 extra pounds the Ram is packing, 600 of them are over the rear tires. Still I can tell spinning the 20's from a stop on the new Ram will be as easy as it was the 17's on the R/T! Man I love this company!

To any body who cares I have a2000R/T reg cab, and the wife has a 98 5.9 G.C. I still can't get her to race me , but it could easily solve this debate if I could.

Well to answer the question 5.9 Jeeps are faster than CC 5.9 R/T at the local 1/8 mile track my 5.9 and 2 other stock ones all run 9.55 consistently and Dakota R/T run 9.90-10.2 On street tires of course. Now a 5.9 Jeep vs. a R/T on M/T Et streets might be a close race.

My R\T ran a best of 15.08 bone stock 3 years ago, I've never had the Cherokee to the track. My wife won't let me! Since then I've added a ported throttle body, accell 300+ digital ignition system, msd 8.5 super conducter wires splitfire plugs(one heat range colder than stock), an open element air filter, and a 180 thermostat. Also waiting to go on are ceremic coated-ported 92 manifolds, a 2-1/4 into 3" flowmaster merge collector, a 3"high flow cat and a 3"in-out dynomax ultra flow welded muffler. My Hypertech power programmer is on order, should have it next week. Once the warrenty is up off come the heads for a port and pollish job and in goes a torque converter and shift kit.

I own a 5.9 Grand with the basic upgrades, cold air, mopar computer etc.
I have raced three 5.9 dakotas and beat them all. One I know was stock but the other two were not, however I don't know what they had.
I also drove a reg. cab 5.9 rt for a whole day and just wasn't impressed, it smoked One tire and didn't have that put you in the seat feeling.
When I launch I hold the brake and rev up to 2100 rpm and take off like a slingshot, that makes for a great stoplight sleeper. However anything that is mopar I like, were all on the same team.PEASE

fast360 i dont know why you only spun one tire in an R/T, but before i put my homebrew in i dragged a GC 5.9limited from a stoplight to about 75-80...he had me off the line and had about 2-3 carlengths but i kept up and eventually caught up to him before he backed off and let me by...my mods were flowmaster 40 series dual exit and a stant 180 degree thermostat...
