If you were to take a vehicle to the dealership a time or two and say that the speedo was intermittently inoperative and they checked it out and didn't find anything wrong you would have a record of this, and you could also say they never could find out what was wrong so if the mileage is off too bad I got tired of taking it back when they could never fix it. I just got used to it

Thats why the mileage is off, not some fuse or speed sensor wire or whatever

That question has been remaining since February of this year..... I think the answer is "don't f*ck with the odometer and you won't have to worry about it."

The only way to track miles is by service records from dealerships and repair shops that are required to report mileage everytime the vehicle is serviced, or when the vehicle is sold/insured. Anytime you change insurance agencys you have to report the current mileage. The only way to prove odometer fraud, IMO, would be if there were less miles on the odo than the last time it was checked. There is no way to verify the number of miles actually driven if the odo isn't working. Not sure about newer vehicles if it can be verified by the OBDII scanner or not.

Alex, well stated. I agree. I now work for a company that does diagnostic software for a major automotive corporation. I'd rather not slam the company right now, but I'll tell you how they work. Just as someone had already stated, the mileage display on the odometer is just that. These days, most vehicles are equipped with digital readout which are just that, A Display, read out, output, whatever... The PCM is what tracks mileage. Most of the time, the mileage is calculated through the rear wheel ABS sensor. Same as your speedometer display. A few brilliant idiots were unplugging their ABS Sensor harnesses for oh, say 50-60K miles and plugging them back in to turn the leases in. So my company, in all their greatness, decided to put in a little backup logic. A little sensor called an OSS plugs into your trans. This reads Output shaft speed of both autos and manuals. What happens, is the PCM collects data from the ABS wheel speed sensors, compares it to data from the OSS, and calculates driveline slip and wheel speed differential. This is useful for both the ABS system (oops front wheels are locked, GO ABS!!!) and for the PCM mileage info (PCM "Hmmm, I'm seeing 3500RPM at the OSS, so I should be going 40 Mph in 3rd. Why is my Rear ABS sensors saying 0MPH? I better set a DTC (code) and light up the MIL (Service engine light)." Theres a few ways around all of these items, but one involves removing/ disabling the ABS system entirely and losing your speedometer display. The other method is just as illegal, and if you don't know it already, you don't need to know it. (man, that last sentence sounded alot like my ex-girlfriend.) Anyways, just get over it, man up, open your wallet, and pay the damn over-mileage. Have a nice day!

Keep it rubber side down.
