Can anyone tell me if upgrading the ignition on a 2000 model is of a performance/ fuel economy benefit? I was thinking of using something like MSD, Accel, or Holley if this was beneficial. I probably would buy the ignition box and/ or coil: maybe just the cool. I already have Kenne Bell (Taylor) wires. These should be sufficient. I am also using the 3923's. The reason I am asking this question is because I was considering buying the Kenne Bell Optomizer, and they told me that the 2000 models were already advanced in spark and fuel delivery, and that upgrading to there product would not provide any power benefits. I don't see any reason for them to lie about this, since I was going to purchase their product, and they said it won't help. If anyone has an aftermarket ignition, please let me know what gains or disadvantages you have had. Dyno numbers would also be useful, if anyone has them. Thanks.

If Mallory still makes their huge coil get it. I think they called it their pro coil. I will have to check this weekend if I remember. I have one I used on an old corvette motor. It had a realy hot spark! It was hooter then the Accel Super coil it replaced.

This past weekend, I installed the MSD 6A on my 2001 5.9 auto. I already had MSD 8.5 wires, brass cap and Autolite 3923s. I am in the process of deciding which coil to use.

It has been raining ever since I installed the MSD and have not been able to "test drive" it. I think the idle may be smoother.

Hopefully I'll notice some improvement in performance and MPG.

I got my MSD6A used for $100, including the universal wiring harness. I had already decided to go with MSD when I came across the used unit. Installation was easy. However, the MSD unit is fairly large and looks sorta awkward mounted to the passenger side fender well.

Some of the other units may be smaller and easier to mount.

Let me know what coil you decide on.

Bill

Conig,
Yes that is the mod that I done. I have a 5.9, so I'm sure it differs from your 4.7. Here is what I did, though.
1. removed the map sensor (2 torx bolts)
2. reversed elbow on bottom of map sensor so that
it points to the front of the truck
3. put a 3/16" vacuum cap on the port on the TB
where the elbow was attached
4. installed a 3/16" - 1/4" vacuum line connector
to the elbow on the bottom of the map sensor
5. installed 1/4" vacuum line to the other end of
the connector
6. routed the line under the fuel rail and plugged
it into an unused vacuum port on the right
(passenger) side of the intake manifold (just
removed the factory vacuum cap, and plug the
new hose right up

Thats it!! Hope this helps!!

You can do this mod for less than $4.00 including sales tax if you have it. I paid $1.50 for a package of two of the connectors, and $1.50 for 2 foot of vacuum line (I only needed about 1 foot, however). I first heard of this mod from B. Good on this forum, but he was hooking his to the brake booster. This works fine, but takes more items, and doesn't look as neat as the one I described.

Jimmeyjack,
Not very good!! My truck does weigh 5,250 pounds empty, however. This does not help fuel mileage at all. It runs really well to be this heavy. These mods helped a lot. The single most noticeable mod was the headers. It will slam you into the seat when punched. Anyway, I get between 10.5-12 mpg for around town/ short trip driving, and around 14-15.5 on the highway. The factory automatic's shift happiness doesn't contribute to good fuel mileage, either. The trans, weight of the truck, and 3.92 gears are all downfalls to good mileage. I knew this when I bought it however. I bought it to haul butt!!!
