Subject: anyone tried alum. heads on a 5.9?

Mopar performance has a set of stock casting alumnum heads, has anyone tried them? How about the aluminum heads with the 2.02 intake valves designed for the 5.9magnum? I am thinking about investing in set.

Too expensive and not worth the extra effort. Unless you're running high rpm's and are producing a sh-tload of heat (Turbo or Supercharger running 12+#'s boost), the Mopar Performance "R/T" heads will perform just fine. (In stock form, the MP "R/T" heads easily outflow a set of ported factory 5.9L heads...modified "R/T" heads flow even more.)

You'll also want to keep the intake valve size at 1.92" or 1.97" to keep the powerband useable on the street and (for supercharged or nitroused engines)...upgrade the exhaust valve to the 1.65". If you plan on running the 2.02" intake valve heads, be prepared to bog down on the bottom end...unless you have a blower to compensate and some shorter gears (4.10...prefer 4.56:1) and/or a 2600+ stall converter.

I just spent $450 on the mopar 1.7 roller rockers. I want to make some power should I go with mopar aluminum heads or the stock r/t heads and do I need to go to double springs and new retainers. Where can I get a good set of aluminum heads if i go with them and how much do they run, price$$$?

You can put the 1.7's on the stock heads for an increase in the 2500 rpm and up. Many in the know believe that the iron R/T heads flow better than the aluminum out of the box, and at quite a savings. It is not necessary to replace the stock springs but if you are going to be pushing it to 5k and beyond it would be a wise choice. If you replace the factory springs with the Mopar Performance springs you will need to replace the retainers also. The factory springs reduce in diameter the last couple of windings under the retainer.
