hey everyone. thanks to all who post on this site. since i got my truck, i've turned into a nut about ways to make it better....and this site has helped a ton with providing me some knowledge. i only wish my wallet was as eager as i am to dive right in!

todays question:

spark plugs: i've heard that these are a good investment even though they dont really help the speed. it seems the autolite 3923's are the popular way to go. i noticed that speedtweaks (awesome site, bernd) says that they are "a heat cycle colder) than normal and that it helps with modified engines." my question, are these okay with an un-modified (for now) engine? and what wires should i get to go with them? thanks for the help.

They work just fine with a unmodified engines.

2001 4.7 5sp 3.92 LSD sport plus
Ported throttle body, IAT adjuster, flowmaster cat back, adjusted TPS from .51v to .76v
Working on custom 4" cold air intake

Mike, I would go with the MSD 8.5 super conductor wires. I got them; they will last a while I hope...

Also, depending on what engine you have I would get a better ignition coil. Hotter spark improves throttle response and performance.

If it is a 4.7 then you will have a hard time finding wires. lol. Mainly because there are none. Only coils on top of the plugs.

Don't replace them I t would be like replacing the coil on a regular engine, no point in doing it. Will cost 8 times as much as well. Nothing else to do to the ignition system they are pretty good stock.

With a heavyly modified engine a cooler plug is needed to help reduce/prevent detonation!!! If you are not running nitrious, forced induction, or increased static compression then going to a colder plug will do nothing for you. It may actualy cause fouling problems, especialy if you do mostly around town driveing and short trips. P.S. While you can go 1 to 2 temp cooler depending on use never go to a warmer plug. One to two heat ranges hotter can be enough to destroy an engine.

Sandman is right, the only reason to switch to colder/hotter plugs is to eliminate engine ping. The MSD stuff is crap. A stock coil puts out about 10k volts which is plenty of spark. Going to 40k volts will only burn out your spark plugs faster. Think about it, the only thing that will make fuel burn faster is the octane. The higher the octane the harder it is to burn. Why do you think it's called predetonation. The gas burns to early and slams the piston. Just a heads up so you don't waste your money on MSD.
