Hi all, I've been reading some past posts on the airaid intake, the z tube, etc, I read about some saying the airaid has a shield to isolate the filter from engine heat, and how the z tube as well as others do away with the factory air box all together moving the filter forward. I hear I should remove the rubber from the rad. support to allow more air flow to get in, some talk about having a ram air setup pulling air in from under the valance, I read a comment about how much air you would get at a stop light, My ? on this is how much power do you need while stopped?, the old muscle cars of the past that had ram air like the 70 ss chevelle used a flap in the hood that only opened at WOT, other cars were similiar. What I really want to know is, how important is it really to have the air filter shielded? The Z tube is out in the open isn't it? The volant ( not sure if that's right spelling) uses a little shield on one side of the filter ( how much is that supposed to do????) I know colder denser air will make more power, but wouldn't replacing the stock filter with just about anything be better than stock? I know I'm new on this site I don't claim to know everything there is about making horse power, this truck is my first V8 vehicle in over 12 years!!. So this is what I've done so far intake wise: Removed factory air box on throttle body, eliminated factory accordian hose, used a 3" rubber elbow on TB to a 7" pc. of 3" PVC to a 3" rubber coupling to the factory air filter box. I haven't gone farther as I'm debating what filter and how I want to do the rest. I don't know I can't see spending $240 on a Z tube that looks like a pc of coated exhaust pipe, and uses a filter from a company that I've never heard of. How long has K+N been around? How many racers and race teams rely on K+N they must be doing something right. So for $17 for my 2 rubber fittings (that actually don't look bad under the hood) and $.89 for a 1' pc of 3" pvc, I can get a K+N round tapered filter for about $40 and be at a total of $58 if it works the same as the more expensive kits thats good, if it looks worse oh well, like someone once said on this site I want performance not looks, sounds good to me. I know I'll probably get slammed for some of the stuff I wrote Don't mean to hurt any ones feelings or knock any products just my thoughts and opinions, any body want to add their 2 cents? I'd like to hear your thoughts.

I assume you are talking about a 4.7.

Hitting the return key occassionally will help readers get through a long post a little better.

I actually noticed a slight DEcrease in power (0-60 G-Tech testing)after replacing the factory airhat and accordian hose with the fernco rubber 90 and PVC setup. The factiry box had a K&N drop- in in it.

I've seen some posts talking about the accordian hose actually being 3.25 inches, and the PVC at 3" is a restriction???? Anyway, it didn't work for me, and I went back the the factory airhat and the K&N dropin filter setup. I believe the Z-tube is 4" in diameter to match the opening on the Flowmetric TB.

I'm considering the Speedtweaks TB/Z-tube/IAT package, K&N FIPK (if ever finished), or a SC (wife permitting).

The 4.7 supposedly really likes the air hat that it comes with, keep that in mind

I replaced my factory air hat with a 360airintakez intake for $160. It is very similar to the Z-tube in design. I haven't gotten hard numbers on power after this mod, but the butt dyno has felt a positive difference in the low end.
In a way it's hurt my 1/4 because of too much wheel spin in the launch,,,,catch 22,,mo' power, less traction. sux.

Sorry for the long post shouldn't of had that chinese food before I wrote it lol, anyway, yes my truck has the 4.7, Not sure if the accordian hose is 3.25" or not but even if it is I would think going from a ribbed hose to a smooth one has to be better even if it is a .25" smaller.
Plus I gave the inside of the PVC a nice coat of Mothers reflections wax!! That also helped slide the rubber coupling over the PVC, I know it couldn't have added much to the power but I can definetly notice a slight difference it feels stronger, def. louder. What kind of 0 to 60 times will a stock 4x4 4.7 auto do? Do you know? thanks everyone for your opinions,

TONY
