Hey all, I just wanted to tell any Gen I people out there that if removing your cat. converter ever crossed your mind, go for it! I just cut mine off and welded in a piece of straight pipe. It gives my 3.9 a great tone and also helps alittle performance wise also. Hopefully I will see a MPG gain next fill up. It all went great and I highly recomend it to anyone who has the opportunity to do so. Thanks,
Joe E.

i wanna get rid of my pre-cats with the dual cat box and have a new y-pipe put in, maybe a a new custom y-pipe would seal better on the headers flange which i'm having a small leak with. Would exhaust shops build y-pipes? Anyone with a 4.7 remove their pre-cats yet? What were the results?

FYI: I cut mine out too about a year ago. mpg's and hp's went up a little as a result. The pre-1992 cats are made of a honeycomb material, robbing power and exhaust flow severely.

I can still pass an emissions test though. I went into a local place just for kicks to see. I cannot pass the visual test because of "tampering". But when he put up my truck on the exhaust test, I passed. He said it has to be an efficient engine, and probably extremely high fuel combustion in the cylinders. Thanks Jacobs ignitions!

Joe - You might cut out the smog pump belt. That will add a few ponies too! You dont need it anymore!

I just hope you all never "break down" in Cali, you could get into big trouble if you try to get an illegal vehicle fixed... :o

Thank God I don't live in Califonia! I would be put under the jail. I can't stand all those restrictions on vehicles there. I might break them just for spite. They just don't leave any room for some good old hot rodding !! I don't mean to offend those who live there, but I could not live there.

TigerDak, what are you talking about the "Smog Pump Belt."? I have not seen anything on this before. But if you could explain its use to be purpose and its location in the truck, I would love to ditch the thing. And about the Edl. headers I am going to install this weekend, I just had a guy with a newer 4.7L say they did nothing, maybe a pony or 2. TigerDak, since I know you have the same engine as mine, what your thought on them. I know you like them due to prior conversations, but what type of real HP do you think you made.

And to all you Cali. guys, Yeah, I do feel sorry for you about smog emissions, but almost every after market auto shop I see is in Cali. I live in Fla, the shp. costs are nuts. You guys get the goods in that that dept.
Thanks for all you coments. Joe E.

There are nice exhaust hp gains from the headers. The biggest thing about headers is you need to have the rest of the exhaust free flowing, too. Cut out the cat, free flowing muffler, and custom pipes is enough. There are big gains from the headers. The truck will run strong and get better mpgs, even if just a little. I credit most of my hp gains from the headers out of all my mods. Donald has installed the Edelbrocks. He would be a good source for more information.

When you open the hood, right in front of the radiator you will see all the belts. Forget about the two belts that power the alternator. Look to the right and you will see one belt going down and powering the power steering and another going up. Dont cut the power steering belt! Cut the other one. It is powering the smog pump, that strange out-of-place looking thing that is above the power steering pump. That is the smog pump that isnt doing you much anymore. Thats the belt you can cut off. Its only one belt.

I cut mine off about a year ago. I have a 96' and it was rattling all over the place, it was audible in the cab. It was also made of the honeycomb material and was loose inside the cat itself. cut it off and replaced it with a 3 inch straight pipe from the fact. headers into a 40 series Flowmaster with 2 1/2 dual pipes coming out of it. sounds, performs and most importantly SMELLS alot better. nothing beats turning off the Dak and walking behind it and smelling and seeing exhaust. Down with Mother Earth!!!

I had a 97 and had a high flow cat put in that I got from Jegs. I believe the cat is made by Dynomax and allows for 20% more air flow. It cost me about $200 to buy and install. I had a lot more horse power, but MGP didn't improve. If you have a 97 or newer or want to keep the cat this is a pretty good route to take.

Hey TigerDak, I have that 90' with the 3.9L. I have a flowmaster muffler with dual 2.75 in exhaust pipes. All custom of course. Not body makes anything for our daks. But I also obviously have no cat, and I have the K&N homebrew cold air intake. With the headers, I am looking fo a good pop up in HP. After headers, what else is there to do to a old 3.9? Obviously a supercharger and a Jet chip but anything else? What type of ignition would any of you recomend for a 1990 V6 dak? Thanks alot guys, yall are all incredible!
Have a good one. Joe E.

im a resource economics major and learn lots about saving the environment and preserving natural resources. however, i think there is more priority in finding alternative fuels and energy sources especially for powerplants than there is for penalizing maybe 2% of the population who modify their cars. why not concentrate on conserving natural resources instead of who took their cats off. all cars should just come with cats and thats it. if people take them off thats their business but still the tiny part of the population that actually would remove them would have just about zero impact on the planet. and besides, people with no cats are reporting better gas mileage so a little more pollution for a little less gas consumption. seems like a good trade to me.
