I saw your list of impressive modifications in response to CWs post.

I am particullary interested in your opinion of the 4.10 gears. I think my next upgrade will be the rear gear. I currently have 3.55s under a 2001 QC 5.9 auto.

I have asked about rear gears several times on the board and keep getting recommendations to go with the 3.92s. However, I'm not convinced that going from 3.55s to 3.92s is going to make that much of a difference performance wise (or MPG wise). I guess I'm looking for some one to recommend the 4.10s.

Anyway..I was wondering what gears you went from and how dramatic the performance increase was. What was the effect on you MPG?

Apologies to the rest of the board for this repetitive subject.

Bill

listen my truck was stock with 3.55. if you are going to change gears for performance then go with 4.10. there is little difference between 3.92 and 4.10. However a 3.92 is a stock gear a 4.10 is performance. It's harder and stronger. Downfall is you get alittle more howl out of a 4.10. I gained a 1/2 second in the1/4 going from3.55 to 4.10. If you are worried about gas mileage buy a 6. 4.10's work. with over drive you don't have to worry about to high of revs on the higway. maybe 2800 at90 mph

OK!!!!

What brand of gears did you use?

I talked to an installer in the Houston area that recommends/sells US Gears because they are supposed to be quieter. US Gears are about the same price as Richmond gears (+/- $300 a set, not including install kit). Randys Gears (Ring and Pinion) are $100 cheaper.

I'm not as concerned about saving money as I am about getting the right, quiet gear.

Thanks for the response.

I have motive gear. Richmonds are really good to. if your so worried about noise then go with the mopar 3.92. it's quiet and is really not awhole lot higher gear.

ltl punisher, what was the part number for you 14" K&N? Is it just the drop in?

the 14" k&n sits on top of the TB just like on the older cars. i had one for about 2 years and it started to shrink about 3"(probably from engine heat) so i took it out and bought a K&N gen II. i figured it would work better than sucking in hot air.

you can't compare a genII k&n with the 14" especially with the xstream top. plus i use a pro-glass ram air hood. sorry don't have numbers handy. i've had mine for four years and it didn't shrink except when i drove over it when i took it off a the drags. YOU CAN HEAR THE DIFFERENCE FROM THE 14" FROM THE GENII. cold air is great but having enough is more important. 14" 1000cfm without xstream top

yes you can compair the two! if the gen II can flow enough air to feed the 408, it can feed a 360. when i changed over i noticed a LITTLE improvement in midrange, but not much more. im sure in hotter weather the get II will be even better. i didnt have the extream top, nor do i have a "ram air" hood. so a person with a set up like mine would benifit from a gen II.

maby yours didnt shrink because it has cool air flowing on it constantly. my engine did to my k&n, what a clothes dryer would to to a cloth shirt...IT SHRUNK IT.

i cant tell any differance in sound between the two.

andrew, if you are on a budjet, get the 14" its only like $100 without the extream top. if you have a little more, go with the gen II (expecially if you dont have a ram air hood)

I'm sorry but i'm still going to have to disagree. I'm not saying the gen II is not enough I,m saying it flows more. If i'm wrong then why does every one run with out filters at the drags. The gen II has a pipe which causes restriction. I have noticed a gain of 2 tenths of a second removing the filter with genII. so if taken in the cold air was more important than flowing more why would this happen. The genII is not much different then cutting the stock air box, stuffing a cone filter in it, and replacing the flexible duct hose with soid tube (polished aluminum). I could do that in a couple hours. and only spend 80 bucks. How much is the genII? That's what i thought. If that cone set up was better why wouldn't they put a set up like that on street/strip carberated muscle cars. it is very simler to bolt the same set as the genII on a carb

I bought the 10" Edelbrock open element air cleaner for my Dad's V-6 and it cost $17.00 at AutoZone with the wing nut. He got 1 more mile per gallon and much better throttle response. The element is a paper filter. I think the 14" cleaner was $20. I'm not sure what a 14x3 K&N runs, but the 14x2.5 drop in that I had in my 1992 V-6 was $35.

I bet you could just buy that and then the $35 K&N filter (10 x 3) and sandwich in between the Edelbrock Chrome. Doesn't even need the spacer to clear the linkage. I wouldn't spend $100 or $80.......

like i said it works better for you because you have a ram air hood. the gen II has a bigger tube than the stock box, and also is smoother compaired to the stock accordian tube.

your TB can only flow 500-600cfm so filter that can flow 1000 dosent do anything. someone dyno'd a modded 360 with the gen II and WITHOUT a filter, and there was no differance in hp

I have had both, and i think the gen II is a little better. i havent had it in 100+ temps yet, but i think the higher the temp. the better the gen II will perform

well i'm not going to say no more. but where i work on my truck there is a dyno. A genII also limits you to how many upgrades you can do I'm running a 1000 cfm 4bbl tb. Now if i started with the genII i'd be buying a new filter and spending money that i could use on something else. So if you want to spend more for less go right ahead. I will mention again that my truck was running 12.9 at 104 and should easily be in the 11's this year. GenII still takes air from engine compartment even though it is shielded from the motor. Take the info you want. But good luck, and drive fast.

Dakaty, I havn't decided yet, but I have an idea. I am not sure how well it would work on my engine either. The rougher ride, more noise, and higher RPM don't bother me, but I don't know all that much about keeping with front and rear within 1% of eachother and such so there is no damage. I am going to have to consult a mechanic friend on that one, but if any of you all have any experience with RC 4.7L 2WD SLT+ LSD 3.92 would work with 4.11s, PLEASE tell me, thanks. That extra push those gears make would be real nice where I go.
