i have an 01 4.7 auto and cant get the aggressive sound I want. I have a 2 chamber flowmaster, chip, intake, and throttle body spacer, but the exhaust is almost silent at certain RPM's. would changing the stock pipe to 3" improve the sound by much, or is it a waste of money. I realize headers are the obvious solution, but are out of my budget right now. any feedback would be great.

Well depending on the type of sound that you are wanting, would then depend on the type of muffler that you go with, I have a 01 4.7 w/ flowmaster single in/dual out, IAT, 70mm TB, 4" intake, and my sounds great, other think so too, (kind-of sounds like a mustang). If you are wanting sound (loud), and dont mind loosing some bottom end hp/tq, then go with true dual's, and a good muffler, flowmaster, glasspacs, gibson, etc.

Speakin of budget Doug, what kind of mpg are you gettin with the mods you have done so far? I have Flowmaster cat back and AirRaid Intake and I lost 2-3 mpg from stock of 18 mpg. I take it you have the Jet Chip and Poweraid TB spacer? If you are not getting any better mpg that I am, did you notice an increase in performance from either of those mods? I had a Jet Chip in my 99 3.9 and it sucked, never tried a TB spacer, but I have seen on this board that the only Magnum engine it may work on is our 4.7 so any help would be appreciated. I don't feel like throwing away another $300+ for mods that are not worth it.

The flowmaster I have on my truck has a 3" tail pipe and is nearly silent just deeper and throatier than stock.

MBRP makes a nice exhaust system that sounds really good but are a bit expensive. This guy has one installed and has a sound file. (http://home.ec.rr.com/blackdak/) I had the AirRaid intake and spacer along with a Borla system and got around 18 MPG.

Re: throttle body spacer/chip...I noticed a few horses extra from the spacer, and it increased the throaty sound when peddle was to the floor, I added spacer and chip at the same time, so other than better acceleration response, the chip didnt seem like it did much. thanx for the exhaust tips, I will probably go with the dual outlet route.

P.S. gas mileage has always been bad...my foots a little heavy! I get approximately 220 miles on a full tank, I think my tank is 17 gallons??? most of my driving is city, not highway.

The single biggest change to the exhaust note on my 4.7 came from installing a larger catalytic convertor. It's my opinion that the convertor is doing a large portion of the "muffling". And then of course now that the turbo is on there..... there is NO sound.
