Hello all I'm new to this site and have been reading a few posts the last few days. I have a 01 cc 4x4 4.7 V8 auto, I want to put a flowmaster on it, I've heard quite a few recommendations toward a 40 series muffler, what I want to do is a 3" single in the factory location. My problem is I can't find a muffler shop that does mandrel bends. I talked to flowmaster and they said bending 3" pipe with a regular tubing bender could bring the ID down to 2 1/2" not what I want. I'm in the central florida/Orlando area, any one who can help or may have a shop they can recommend would be appreciated. Thanks TONY

I just used the cat back system for a 98-99 dakota with a 5.2 just had to put in a 5" extention for the shorter muffler fit perfect. It has the 3" mandral bent tail pipe.

Flowmaster actually recommends that you stay with the 21/2 inch exhaust for the 4.7, and that is why they sell a mandrel bent cat-back kit for it. the kit was $189.99 through summit. I recommend calling Flowmaster first and getting a part number first, because the kits are so new.

I have the Flowmaster Force II 2.5" stainless catback system on my 4.7, Part/System# 17278. Sounds awesome and goes on better than stock, took me half the time to install catback than it did to remove factory exhaust but the effort was well worth it. DC overtightens every friggin clamp on the exhaust causing a crimp all the way around the pipe. I had to cut my exhaust off at the cat after over an hour with a torch and rubber mallet wouldn't do the job. When I put Flowmaster on my 99 RC 4x4, had the same problem.

I just measured my tailpipe and it is 3" although paperwork shows 2.5" so Summit's database is correct it seems and Flowmaster's instructions are not, thought it looked like 3" but I never actually measured it until now. Order it up and get ready to R U M B L E! Let me know what you think once it is installed.

I'm going to call flowmaster tomorrow and ask about this, I checked their site kit #17173 says 98 dakota with 5.2 - 5.9 V8's muffler #52557 which is a 2 1/2" muffler and they list kit # 17278 which says 2000 dakota with V8 muffler # 52558 also a 2 1/2" muffler only difference in the 2 mufflers is where the inlet is. Also does the force 2 kit mount directly to a flange or does it just slip over the existing pipe?

Talked to a tech at flowmaster today, the kit part # 17278 is for the 2000-2001 v8 dakota's, it comes with 2 pipes, one for the quad cab and one for the club cab. The pipe must be 2 1/2" since they said both the front and rear clamps are 2 1/2". Also if you look up the muffler # alone it is a 2 1/2 in and out. I asked why they don't make the american thunder system for our trucks, they said when they develop a new kit most of the time it's what a customer is looking for. example someone contacts flowmaster about a system for a new vehicle that they don't have a kit for and they'll use the customers vehicle to develop the kit. Customer wants loud that's what they develop and so on.

I expected the kit to be 2.5", I just measured again and the tailpipe is definately 3"? Also, that's a damn good price through Summit for less than $200, I paid $200 with S/H at dealer cost(no volume discount). Good luck with your exhaust.

Your pipe probably is 3", I called flowmaster again and talked to a different guy, he said it's definetly 3", he said he used to work in the dept where they bent the pipe and if you look at the diagram for that part # you'll see that the # for the pipe starts with 26 he said all the 3" pipe starts with 26. So I guess the first lady I talked to didn't know what was what. I still want to know what this kit sounds like.

If you live near Syracuse, NY you can hear mine or if you have ever heard Flowmaster on a Chevy truck with 350, it is very similar in tone. I can sum up how it sounds in one word, awesome, and so does everyone who has ridden in my truck or heard it. If you like to HEAR your exhaust when under medium to hard acceleration and don't mind a low rumble at idle or highway speeds over 65mph(without the resonation that some Flowmaster or other high flow mufflers give), you will not be dissapointed and if you add an aftermarket high flow intake system like mine the sound only gets better. You have a V-8, why not let everyone know!
