Subject: Tranny slipping at 70mph?

My '99 automatic with 52,000 runs fine except when I'm going up a steep grade on the interstate at 70+ mph. When the steepness of the grade gets to be to much it starts making a loud tincking sound and starts to loose power. Once I ease up, it doesn't happen. Is the transmission slipping or what? The check engine light has come on at least twice. I don't notice the noise any other time. What's up with it?

Are the RPMs going up as your slowing down? Thats what happens when the transmission slips.

Sounds more like something else though... Don't know what. Is this the only time it does it? What type of engine?

Sound like you have a pinging problem (detonation). You can try switching to 3923 plugs, better wores and a 180 thermo but if you have a leaking intake plenum gasket this will not help you. If you have noticed that the engine has been using more oil lately than the intake plenum gasket may be leaking.
Here is how to check:
1-pull the pcv valve out of the valve cover
2-pull the breather hose off of the air cleaner leave attached to valve cover.
3-put your fingers over the hole in the valve cover grommet and over the breather tube still attached to the other valve cover. A slight pressure will build up if the gasket not leaking and vacuume will build up if the intake plenum is leaking.
Do not do hold this test for more than one minute as excessive pressure will build up. So if vacuume builds up then the intake plenum gasket need repacement. Good luck and have fun.
