Subject: Numbers for KRC 2.5L kits?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi, I'm looking at some of the KRC stuff for my '98 2.5L. I was wondering if anyone had gotten one of his intake kits and modded throtle bodies on a 2.5 and actually had some numbers on them. I haven't called yet (its long distance) so if anyone has prices on this stuff, that be handy too. I'd also like to say - between this site, speedtweaks, and KRC's site, I've found a lot of information over the past few days that I've been looking for.

I'm curious, too. There's very little out there for us guys with the 4 cylinder.

Our own forum would be badass! Not extremely high-traffic, but atleast we would know where to go for some good advice!

That would be cool, after all the chevy s-10, nissan frontier, and ford ranger boards all have 4 banger forums.

Yes, KRC does custom mods for the 2.5L - I know for a fact they do K&N intake kits and throtle bodies. Those two mods are the one's I'm interested in. I would like to know what the price is on the mods, and how much performance you actually gain - something like an estimated number ponies, or torque. In other words, I'd like enough information to calculate $$/HP on the upgrade. This upgrade obviously won't produce the power a supercharger would, but not everyone has 3K to dump into getting a little more power to climb the local hills.

KRC does nothing but the highest quality work. I stumbled upon this site about 8 months or so ago and learned about KRC. As luck would have it I live in Orlando and KRC is in Cocoa, FL, about an hour east on the coast. Small world I guess. I have a 96' Dak Sport 5 spd. 4 cyl. and have had a lot of work done by Marty over there. My mods are as follows:

-custom K&N Gen II intake using factory airhat and huge $60 K&N cylinder filter (have part #), hollowed out the factory intake tubing and straightend out the flow direction, cut off factory filter box among other things (KRC)
-KRC custom porting of factory throttle body, sweet job, thinned the butterfly and the whole nine.
-Mopar performance cam (medium lobe)
-K&N crankcase vent filter w/ chrome top
-advanced timing from 12.5 degrees to I believe 16
-Bosch +4 plugs, Bosch wires, Borg Warner brass cap & rotor
-Robert Shaw 180 degree thermostat
-Flowmaster 40 series single in, dual out muffler
-removed cat
-2 1/2 inch hand bent thick gauge aluminum exhaust tubing exiting as duals out the rear, nice rumble, most think it's at least a V6
-PCM flashed and modified

I feel I am the most knowledgeable guy about 4 bangers on this site, I keep quiet these days cause I caught a lot of crap earlier on about the 4 cyl. thing. It was an uphill battle to find mods. but I did. Reply if you want to know more. I also have a host of exterior mods and know how if interested in knowing.

Eddie - I'm very interested in the cost of the K&N GENII intake and the throtle body work, as well as performance gains achieved with just these two mods. Can you take a stab at it? It would be fairly easy I would think if you didn't have all this done at once to give some idea of those two mods.

I did indeed have both mods installed at the same time as well as the plugs, wires, & cap/rotor. It was a long day at KRC to say the least. The factory intake on my Dak was retained only modified. Basically we cut the half of it that contained the filter box and tubing that led to the grille off. The airhat that screws down onto the TB had some silencing pieces of plastic in it that also had to be removed to permit max airflow. The K&N filter used is most easily found at Autozone/Discount Auto Parts, if you have those in your area. It is made for a OEM fit on I believe V8 GMC's like 95-98 fullsize. It is a large cylinder filter, retails around $60-70. Tons of air flow. You can hear the howl of the air being sucked in when stepping on it, very cool indeed. I don't remember exact figures on what was charged since basically the factory air intake was only modified, not replaced. In my opinion the GenII is vastly overpriced and I hear it cracks on some installs around the airhat/TB. Oh well, I probably would of bought one but there isn't one for the 4 cyl. so I had to get creative. No additional parts needed only the filter, the factory setup is very restrictive. The porting of the TB took about an hour I would say to perform. Once again no new parts, only modifying the stock ones, this keeps cost down, I only paid labor on this I think. Very clean work. I forget what I paid, very reasonable though. I would have to say at least 10-20 horsepower gained from these mods. Gas mileage stayed around the same, but I wasn't looking for that anyway, I wanted to get some power from the 4 cyl.

I'm gonna try and get some pics of of the "homemade ram-air" I did last week on my truck. Took a big funnel , attached it to the airbox and it made a good, noticeable difference. Didn't seem to take in any more water, either.

Eddie, please email me with more details. Was it cheaper than a v8 conversion? Can you feel a good bit of difference in throttle responce? Have you dynoed it yet? I don't want 500 hp but i do want to eat my wifes altima (150hp). Any gasket matched head porting? THANX!
