Hi, I'm a rookie, so, sorry if this is a stupid question. What kind of gas should I put in my truck. Is it any better to put the higher octane gas in?
Thanks

The November issue of Car & Driver had an article on just that subject. They ran 5 vehicles on a dyno and on the track, using regular and premium, and they drove them for two days in between tests to allow the computers to adjust. The results from both tests for 3 of the 5 vehicles were within their definition of "normal test to test variability." The two vehicles that made substantial improvements running premium were the Saab 9-5 Aero and the BMW M3, both of which reccomend running premium because the computer is programmed to take advantage of higher octane. Of note to us on this board, they tested a Ram 3500 5.9. It gained 7 hp running premium, but it actually accelerated slower on premium...again, withing C&D's definition of "normal test to test variability."

I run mid grade simply because on regular I get a part throttle ping that annoys me. On mid grade it goes away. The extra 8-10 cents per gallon is worth it to me to have no ping. Unless you're running an engine that is designed to run on premium or whose computer is programmed to take advantage of premium, you will likely not notice any performance difference, but you might notice less pinging.

I have the same problem with regular gas. Only if I use Amoco regular it dosent knock. I have to use the mid with all other brands of gas. Is this bad, does my computer take some time to get used to the octane adjustment?

I use holiday gas and my 99 5.2cc 392's and don't have a problem with anything so I don't think that the higher octane gas is worth the money because here in Mn some stations the price between reg and mid ranges from 6-12cents depending on the station and i don't see that much of a increase for the little octain diff.

I've got a 2001 4.7 with a JET CHIP II that calls for higher octane...I've been feeding it 89 octane and I'm happy with the performance...get about 16.8 MPG with my AWD/Auto/Cat-back exhaust/70MM TB/4inch Z-tube/180 T-stat/3923s/5w30 Royal Purple Synthetic Oil.

A few weeks back, I went to fill up on 89 octane and realized I had put about 5 gallons of 93 in.
I finished with 89 octane...I noticed my MPG for that tank full, jumped close to 19 MPG.

Now I'm back to 16.8 MPG or so with pure 89 octane.

With my local Mobil or Hess station only charging 5 cents more for 93 -vs- 89 octane, it seems like it pays to spend the extra $1.20 per tank to get an extra 2 MPG...go figure.
