hmm seems now when I cruise at 40 and stomp on the gas the truck revs quick for a few seconds then quickly seems to up-shift. This is really starting to be a burden when you want to pass someone(it like hops a gear and has no power to support it). Is the TV cable out of adjustment or is something major going wrong? I have 43,000 miles on the trans/truck and I have had it in for trans work before. I already have to bring it in again because some sensor in the trans acts all goofy when the trans is cold so that when you push on the gas to 1/2-3/4 it slips out of gear. The sensor replacement worked for about 4 months. Well let me know what you guys think it is before I start towing my snowmobile!
These RT trans's really suck, cool looking truck, but should have bought 4x4 4.7

I havn't had any problems with my tranny that I didn't cause. I have 80000 on my tranny right now, and have never had any problems with it. My original tranny was replaced when it started leaking at 3800 miles due to me jumping the truck. Sounds liek maybe your torque converter might be goin bad, or coudl have to do with the sensor you are getting replaced. Also, have them check the transducer in the tranny. I have heard of this causeing shifting problems.

If you are using the +3 trans fluid you should add anti-foam (available at any Dodge dealer)or it will foam , if your TV cable is adjusted wrong it will not shift correct, fluid level must be at the proper level or it will foam.Your problem is common (foam makes it worse)whats happening is this;when you hit the gas the truck is going slow enough to shift to 1st but the trans takes so long to shift from 3rd to 1st that the truck is going to fast for 1st when it gets there and then in a state of confusion goes to 2nd after hitting the rev limiter.This is not just a R/T thing or just a Dodge thing but alot of new trucks do this the 42RE,44RE,and 46RE all may suffer from this problem( I drive a company Ford van that does it to).I saw a 4.7 and a 5.2 with a 44re that did it before and got worse after a fluid change(both refilled using +3 with no anti-foam).A shift kit will slove the problem of you not liking your trans,the shifts will be crisp and fast and the trans won't get confused.Car makers have gone for a soft shift because the magazine testers will rip on a firm shift and the auto makers beleve the public all want a mussshhhhhy shift this is also enginered falure so they can sell you a new one because long soft shifts wear a trans out fast.Hope this helps.

hmm, it is slow enough, but it revs quick and upshifts to fast, it is almost like it just upshifts instead of downshifting to first, which causes it to build speed slower
like literaly revs for 1 second then upshifts, then starts to build accelration, you can hear and fell this bog.

RTjohn,if what your talking about is "hunting for the right gear" it is common in many new auto tranny's. The speeds a may be differnt depending on rear gear but this is whats going on.Lets say you are driving at a steady 38mph in 3rd gear and you mash the go fliper(at 38mph the trans wants to downshift to 1st) then trans starts a 3-1 downshift but before it shifts out of 3rd your speed increases to 40mph (the trans would downshift to 2nd at 40mph)so it gets lost and confused , disengages 3rd but does not engage 1st, shifts to nowhere hits the rev limiter before it engages 2nd.This can happen more often if you lift up on the throttle before you mash the gas.This is not just a Dakota thing alot of new cars do it from time to time.Check the fluid level, adjust the bands,check the TV cable adjustment,make sure you have anti-foam in it,check the line presure.The dealer will tell you "they all do that".

Hey RTJohn U mention your trans. acting weird when its cold...well I dunno if yours did the same thing mine did but mine usually its about 1500-2000 RPMs at 30-35mph but one day it was cold and at 30mph it was at 3000 rmps I was like WTF? Then after I stopped and started it up it went back to normal...hope this doesn't become a problem.

I agree with Aaro, say you want to pass a car going 60mph, currently your in 4th running at 2200rpm's, now you stomp the gas! It either has to select 3rd or 2nd gear to increase the RPM's to get some HP. Say it picks 2nd, a delay to shift is there, plus once engaged your engine rpms run up to near 5k! It's going to happen with 3.92Rear! The 5.9L is not setup to pull over 4k without serverly losing power! Due to the Beer keg Intake with small diameter size holes with long 20 inch runners! This intake it made to have snap from idle to 2500rpm then dies until 3200 to 4000. A 12"runner intake modified or 2bbl M1 can get you good power from 2000rpm to 5000rpm, unlike the Beer Keg. No intake velocity to make power at that rpm! You need 12inch runner at an enlarge size. So it's mostly your engines fault an some due to 3rd and 4th gear being so long. Something like .69 vs a normal 1.00 for a 4 speed. I think 3rd is near the 1.00. The point is, it's normal unless you do some modifications. 1st and 2nd gear on the auto are great, 3rd and 4th or too tall, hench the great load caused most Supercharge 5.9L to ping once they hit 3rd or 4th.

Solution, stay in 3rd or 4th and use your torque to pass someone, until you upgrade. Don't stomp on the puddle. Ease into it. My 2 cents

We have 2 R/T club cabs mine with about 12,000 my wifes with 15,000, my trans has acted up from day one, the shifting back and forth is refered as "bump shift" on various web pages, I have had three TPS's replaced and one trans "module" inside the trans replaced, it is still acting up.
The 3 dealers it has been at are all 5 STAR and none of them can get approval to replace my trans

The anti foam stuff is news to me, will pursue

The cold weather problem is never more evident than here in Canada, in the winter the trans WILL NOT shift in to 4th and the convertor will not lock up, this is controlled by a sensor at the front of the truck passanger side.

My wifes truck shifts perfectly!

My R/T has had shift problems since I bought it. The dealer replaces one thing and then another thing goes wrong. I would love for Dodge to recall these and fix all my problems at once.

The tranny's won't shift into OD(4th) if the tranny is below a certain temp. All truck will do this, and that is why the tranny fluid is routed through the radiator. Don't knwo what the set temp is, but if the tranny fluid is below that temp it won't shift into 4th. I've driven mine in sub zero temps, and it took 30 miles before it finally shifted. That is also why the one guy noticed it shifted fine after he stopped, and restarted because it gave the water time to warm up before having the cold air blasted through the radiator to cool it.
