When's the last time you changed your O2 sensors? They're pretty much history after 60-70K miles. How about the plug wires, are there any white marks on them from arcing? What about the cap and rotor...how old are they. (Check the basics first.)

OCCASIONALLY is not a real bad thing if the pinging is light. One more question, does it only ping when the weter temp is over the normal 180-190 degree range? It's not to rich more fuel would help not hurt unless you have been blowing lots of black somke for some time and filled the heads with carbon deposits, this would show up as carbon fouled plugs. Here are some things that may help 1: make sure you have a good radiator cap! 14-18lbs. If the cap is no good the water will boil off in the heads and make hot spots. 2: flush the cooling system with a cemical flush (this may be the end of a weak water pump or radiator)but at 100,000 miles you may have crud in the water jacket and heads. 3:pull out a few spark plugs if they are white or light gray you could go one step colder. 4: DEI "Radiator Relief" and or an oil cooler will help to get the head temp down(the oil helps cool the heads). 5: A 160 stat will most likely cure the problem and is ok to run in the summer and some people here run it with no problems, but may trip the "check engine light". 6: cold air intake. 7: more mods,a ported TB and headers will get more air in and help to keep the heads cooler(performace computers work best with mods)but do the TB first.

When should you change your wires and cap and rotor. I have 50K on my 98 3.9 and it has never been done. I was thinking of doing this. Would this cause it to ping at all under any type of acceleration. Is pinging noticeble at idle in park. Any info please.

Oil: 3000-3500 miles
Spark Plugs: Check at Oil change and replace at 10-12K miles (7500 miles with MSD Ignition Systems)
Cap/Rotor: Same interval as spark plugs
Plug Wires: Depending on brand. Change the factory wires at 30K and use a quality set of 8mm wires...they should last you 60K miles.
O2 Sensor(s): 60K miles (80K if it's just used as a daily driver without any excessive mods)

50K miles will cause crossfiring under the cap due to excessive carbon "dust".
