Guys I went outside today to move my truck for dad and when I started it up dad said it started smoking a bluish grey smoke? Is this oil you think? I have just installed a Airaid intake sytem on it and was wandering if maybe it could be overly rich because the fumes of the smoke it throughs out smell like unspent gasoline? If I rev it any at all during the initial start up it bellers out more smoke but none at Idle or that I can see while driving? This has tore me all to pieces since I raced it Friday but I mean I didnt dog it or nothing Its only ever ben revved to like 5500 tops! You guys think it could possibly be a bad ring? Im right now letting it set a while for the oil to drain down that way I can look at it and see if the level has changed! Any help will deffinately be appreciated! Its up on all of its regular maintainance, oil changed at every 3000 and all so Im hoping its just the computer telling it to give it more gas since it thinks its colder with the Airaid intake! The truck is a 2001 RC Dak 5-speed with 3.92! Thank You.

Run your finger around the exhust pipe (inside it). If your fingers are oily black then maybe you have an oil problem.

I have seen 4.7 put out just a little bit of oil at startup when they are new. I doute that its running rich because if the computer broke the engine light would come one. Its not the airaid.

I would just take it to the dealer and let them deal with it. Dont tell them you raced it even though that has nothing to do with it. And hopfully everything will be warrintyed.

I guess I should take the Airaid intake off then if I take it back to the dealer and just take it over there and see if it will do what it does here when I get there! I mean it only smokes sometimes not all the time, just like if it sits a while and I start it! The tailpipe is sorta sooty but not really oily? It has a little bit of moisture that dripps out of it to but nothing more than condensation I dont guess? I checked the oil and its right on the level where it should be! I have no clue guys what it could be?

Dont take the airaid system of. It is a item that will not void warrenty. If the instalation you did looks good they wont have anything to say. If they ask you why you put it there just say (hoping to pick up some gas milage). As for the smoking let them figure it out.

I seem to be having simimar problems with my 2000 4.7, but seems only when i re-start it after i run it for a short time, like to just move it in the driveway, etc.. My tailpipes are dry and oil level is right were it should be.. Someone on this formum thought it may just be that the computer is richening out the mixture because it does not come off cold idle before i shut it off. If i move the truck now, i let it run for a while and i have not noticed it lately.. please let us know what the dealer says...... thanks

To make a diffrence on the dipstick it has to really be burning oil. Just a little at idle isnt going to eat anything except your pride. I would not worry. Take to dealer and see what they say. It might be running rich.. Pull a plug and see if its a nice brown tan or a black crudded carboned plug.

Here is a question for everyone having a smoking problem ...... when you bout the truck new did you let the engine break in first? Or did you rag it out right after you left the dealer? I had a friend that started racing people right after he bout his and the high RPM caused the piston rings and cylinder walls not to break in proper thus causeing smoking......... just something for you to think about .......

Nah when I bought mine I took it easy for about 3000 miles, just got into racing it last this past Friday really hard but I mean I still dont dog it that much dont over rev or nothing I havent even ever hit the rev limiter on it never been above 5500 or so. It just getts me? I now have 8,000 miles on it and just got it in July so I have put a bunch of miles on it but nothing to hard on it and as for the oil I dont even know what kind they put in at the dealer? I let them change it so I have no clue if its synthetic or Dino oil? But its never abused so I dont think whatever has happend is my fault? Today when I cleaned it up I cleaned out the tip wit some Mean Green so its spic and span now I can really see if its just sooty or oily! I think Ill take it to the dealer on Wednesday since I get out of school early that day and see if they can find out whats wrong with it? I guess it wont hurt to drive it right now, but are you guys serious about leaving the Airaid intake on there? I mean the paper does say for off road use only? Thanks!

shoulda bought an r/t, then you wouldn't have these problems... flame away guys i'm tired of your r/t vs. 4.7 B.S., at least my r/t doesn't smoke or blow trannies and head gaskets like the 4.7's already do and they have only been out 2 years and they are nothing but a pile of problems and if you don't have them just wait you will.... if you stop beating on your truck before it's broken in then their shouldn't be any smoking at all.... your truck did come with an owners manual?????? correct?? you should read it sometimes they are helpful especially the part that says not to beat it to death before it reachs it's first oil change..... if you beat on your truck at all the dealer will know this so my suggestion would be to go find some new tires or else this may be coming out of your own pocket....

Give chrysler 30 years to perfect this engine like the 5.9 and then we will talk reliability.

Yes i have had a little smoke come out of the exhust pipe at start up on cold days but that went away as it ran more. My 5.9 in durango is flawless at 200000miles with hardly an oil change once every 13000miles. Not one tranny service just top ups.

The 4.7 is pretty reliable though. Not many returning to the dealer for new engines.

This is a new one for me. I've got 26,000 on mine and I'm pretty sure mine is burning clean and I've never had a mechanical problem. I know that in the morning I start mine under a light post and I never noticed any smoke in the light. The only problems I've had were a bad console latch and my drivers window was a little stiff when I rolled it up or down. The dealer happily serviced them both to my satisfaction. I'm still waiting for my engine to blow up since I didn't wait 5,000 miles to switch to Mobil 1.

I am happy to say that my 4.7 is singing like a top. I am sure that there are exceptions but to date most all of the story's I have heard are from abuse. Daily drivers were not designed to be raced from stop light to stop light every day. They were not designed to be jumped over sand dunes or raced weekly at the local drag strip. The other half of the problems that I have seen have been from people trying to modify their truck for more power. If you do not know what the heill you are doing you should not touch it!! I do not think that I could find a single TSB for my 2001 4x4 4.7 A/Trans Quad Cab other then the front seat belt anchor bolts.

Guys I took my truck over to have it checked out today and the guy there said its perfectly normal since the temps are getting cooler here in Ky that it will richen the mixture for a while upon start up but its no big deal and its not oil or anything like that just a richening mode in the computer! Sheew thank God what a relief!

Sandman..... thank you for those words of encouragement. I'm awefully glad I have found a way to produce more horsepower. Now I can jump farther over the Dunes, rip the tires from every single light, and still race every single week at the drag strip. I sure hope my seat belt anchor bolts are OK. hehehe.........just teasin'.

BTW, I only jump my QUAD over the sand dunes.
I only occasionally nail the throttle from a stoplight.
I only race about every other week at the drag strip.
I did modify my truck to make more power.....
but I DO know what the hell I'm doing.
Well, most of the time anyway. hehehe

So far, so good. 450 hp and still getting 20 mpg. I will find out in a couple of weeks what kind of impact my gains have had while towing a loaded trailer to the Dunes.

After I installed my Airraid in my 3.9L, it would "puff" blue-grey smoke on startup. The exhaust tip turned black too. Took it in and the dealer said that, since I'd run it for something like 10000 miles already, adding the Airraid had confused the hell out of the computer. They reset it, no more problem.

Try resetting the computer yet?
