Subject: Question for Bernt
IP: Logged

Message:
Any idea why the 01 dakota has the 68mm TB while the 00 has the 65mm TB? Wouldnt this mean an increase in power for the 01 or is the air intake too restrictive. Also, is the flometrics TB basically identical to the one off the factory 01? So far I have added a flowmaster cat-back and I have a z-tube on order for my 2000 4.7. The next step sounds like a good TB (since Mopar PCM is not available). If both TB are basically the same, I would like to save some money with the factory 01. Any suggestions?

Oh yeah I forgot, wouldnt a larger TB decrease your MPG? I am currently getting 13.5 city in a
00 4x4 3.92 CC. What can I expect from a 68-70mm TB?

From what I found out so far, it was a design "thing" on the initial release of the 4.7L TB's. (But I also agree with Bob's theory.)

As for the larger size on the TB, yes and no. Since the PCM controls the amount of fuel introduced into the engine (via various sensor inputs), it knows air density, fuel rich/lean condition (O2 Sensors), throttle position, and temp and can calculate the amount of fuel to be used based on these inputs. However, going from a 65mm to 68mm throttle won't degrade mileage...but keep in mind that the "Fun Factor" has a lot to do with MPG. (People are excited on the new mod and want to see how fast it is...foot to the floor and the MPG goes down.)

As for the Flometrics TB, it mounts to the intake manifold the same way, throttle linkage mounts the same way (and the sensors as well), but the inlet has a "velocity stack" style opening. I'll see if Bruce has some actual pictures of the final product. On the stock 68mm vs. the Billet TB (around 69mm), the air flow characteristics are much better than the stock TB. Remember, most throttle bodies are designed to have a balance of performance and economy. Aftermarket is geared mainly towards performance (but with economy still in mind). Funny thing is, if you increase the volumetric efficiency of the engine, you get better gas mileage as well. (Wonder when the EPA and the Smog Nazi's will geta clue on this one.)

Thanks Bernd-Bob, the dealer quoted me $262 for the 01 TB. I think you said earlier that the flometrics would be around $400? I know you push the flometrics pretty hard so it must be a good product, but is it worth the extra $150+? The only other mods I plan on adding besides me intake and exhaust, are a mopar PCM and an ignition system (when these are available).

Oh yeah, they say you cannot tow with the mopar PCM due to problems with pinging. Shouldnt adding an ignition system eliminate this problem? I need to tow a 4000lb boat and dont want to sacrafice this for a few extra hp.

Thanks Bob but they told me that they were on back order and didnt know when they would be available. I think theres a co. calles KRC that has them for a lot cheaper ($310) than mopar does, but they said they wouldn't be in stock until August. Do you have one? Want to sell it to me:)

Marty (KRC Performance) also can custom flash the PCM's to what ever you like.

As for adding the ignition system, it isn't available yet for the 4.7's. (They use DIS ignition...not conventional Distributor and Coil.)

Mopar PCM or custom flash. Mopar PCM requires "High Test" but the custom flash can be kept "normal" but the speed limit is raied to 999 in the PCM tables.
