ROB454, I think you summed it up pretty good. I agree the R/T is the best looking truck. For the difference in price I can't make my 4.7SLT look, handle, and run as good as an R/T. When I say look as good I mean the 98-02 models. I don't like the 03's with their new front facia. I don't pull trailers that much and the 5.9L has lots of torque for doing this. Which brings me to my next question. WHY has DC rated the R/T so low for towing capacity? MY God, the RC weighs less than 4K and has the big truck engine, trans, and rear end. What's up with the 1500lb towing capacity? My 92 3.8L Taurus GL was rated for that!
Is there something about the R/T everyone should know about before they pull a FORD or CHEVY to the repair shop?

Allright! I have made a couple of mods and ran my RC 4.7L DAK! I removed the clutch fan, 3rd cat, rear bumper, and spare tire. I added a flowmaster, air filter, and roll pan. I have noticed better throttle response and gas mileage. So far my best run is 15.6@89 through the 1/4. That was the one time the engine didn't bog off the line. I'm not sure what that's all about. I never had that problem before modifying the exhaust and intake. I made several runs over several days and either the engine bogs or the tires spin. Only twice did I have a good launch and the engine didn't bog and the tires didn't spin. 15.6 is just a couple of ticks off a stock R/T's time. I'm sure that a set of HO cams and intake, air raid, and a complete exhaust upgrade will get me around the 15.1sec range. I need a computer reprogram and I might be able to run 15.3 now. I know I can get to the low 15's. That's just 1 sec away from LIGHTNING territory for $10,000.00 less.
Also, this engine only has 1500 miles on it. The last 6 Dodge trucks I've owned didn't run their best times untill they had about 15K miles. I'm sure I can get a 15.5 or 15.4 by doing nothing but putting another 14K miles on it.

1500 lbs on the back of your dak R/T (150 tongue wt.)pulls the chassis down low enough to severly limit the amount of travel the axel has before the thing bottoms out. remember the rear on the R/T is lowered to give it that racy look. It has nothing to do with actual tug power. Doh!!

150lbs won't make an R/T bottom out.The springs are way to stiff for that to happen. 150lbs might make the bumper droop 1/2". That's not the reason it is rated so low on towing. Like I said, my Taurus is rated at 1500lbs. It sets much lower to the ground than the R/T. 150lbs on the back of my Taurus will make the bumper drop about 3".

First I dont think there ever was a 96 lightning. Unless youre talking about the older square ones and I think those were only till 95 but I may be wrong. i thought the 96 were the rounder style not the old square style.
if youre racing the older square version they were not supercharged they only had a 351.

if you were racing the new body style Lightning if it didnt have a Supercharger then it most likely was not a lightning. jsut a guy who had a step side and got the body kit and badges.

The SC motor runs lower compression so if the guy was lame enough to remove the SC he had to redo the intake system and the truck would be a dog.

A real lightning would have your lunch. A modified Dakota ( depends on mods) should/can keep up to a lightning and some can beat lightnings. but a stock 5.2 no way. Either that was the crappiest running truck, the driver had to be completely brain dead or it was a wanna be lightning

anyway at least you won
