Guys, Is the rear axle on an auto tranny 4X4 the same as on a manual tranny 4X2 with both trucks being 97's? The reason I'm asking is that I have the opportunity to buy a used (5k miles)OEM 3.92 rear ring and pinion gear set for $20.I have the standard 3.55 ratio now. Also, would my 3.55 carrier handle the 3.92, size-wise? And am I looking at a dramatic rise in RPM's at highway speed? My truck is NOT a daily driver.
Thanks!

I need a little help here from you. Do you know the size of this ring and pinion that you are considering and do you know what size you have in your truck now.

just count the bolts on the rear of the cover 10 bolts = 8.25" and 12 = 9.25". and the rear axles are not the same the 4x4 had springs on the top of the axle 2wd had them on the bottom. So new spring perches would have to be welded on at the correct pinion angle.

KJ, They are both 8.25, I just wasn't sure that they would be interchangeable, like maybe the pinion shaft length or diameter might be different or something like that.

CW, They are both 10 bolt.I was just going to swap the ring and pinion. I don't need the headaches of swapping the whole axle!!
THANKS GUYS!!!
