Subject: Big Block Dakota!!!!!

Message:
Anyone out there that has tried to put a big block in a 87 - 95 Dakota. I have a 91 that I have a 67 newport rear end shortend 3.5" on both sides and a hopped up A-500 trans. I can get a kit to mate the big block to the trans. Need info on the k member mods and headers. Working on a 496 c.i. 400 big block for this truck if I can get the big block to fit.

you could put some mudders on it with a solid axle swap and man would a 440 or hemi churn the mud, you could dig your way through almost anything with that much power

Your tranny will not handle a big block, nor will it mate up to it.

I've heard stories about 440s in daks. If you want a serious drag racer though I've heard you'll have to stiffen up the frame. I also watch on TV once as the head of Mopar Performance was asked what was the best thing to put the 528 in and he said a late model GenII dak. Said the frame was already in pretty good shape and they even had a frame there with the motor and tranny in it.

Like I said earlier and I would like someone to disagree with me if you think so.
You can do ANYTHING you want to if you have the $$$. You can fit a pratt&whitney in there if you want to.

According to a friend I race with it was no big deal to put a bored and stroked 400 big block in his '89 Dak. He uses a 727 torqueflite and an 8 3/4 rear from a B-body car. Stock rear springs w/clamps, 10.5" slicks, small fuel cell and 2 batteries in bed, no frame re-inforcements, shorty block-hugger type headers. He's been racing it for about 3 years.

I've raced against him so I have a time slip for one of his runs.....1.506 60', 11.227 @ 116.19 mph.

i just finished puttina 440 into a 2001 dakota
it fit perfect the drivers side motor mount was in the right place but i had to move the pass side one the be even with the drivers i had to put a rear sump oil pan on it and i had to make a new bracket for the tranny to mount up right i had a drive shaft made. the end result is awsome i have not raced anyone with it yet ineed new tires i am running the stock 275 65 16s on it and from dead stop it will just spin forever and ever and ever

D-C went to a lot of trouble to make the 4.7 50 pounds lighter than the previous 5.2. A 440 weighs 900 pounds. Your weight transfer has now totally shot to the front wheels.

Who cares you're just going in a straight line anyways. Your not looking for a handling machine. If that is what you wanted you would build a 3.9 with twin BO's!!!

Even if your just going in a straight line your weight transfer/ratio is still important for traction, not just handling 1444. But who cares big blocks are cool!

Anyone who has owned old mopars (such as myself) will tell you.....power is nothing without traction.
If I remember correctly a 69 RoadRunner with a 440 6 pack was faster than a 70 Cuda Hemi. You flamers are more than welcome to check my memory but being the owner of a few big block Cudas and a big block B body or 2 I will be the first to tell you that a Cuda hasnt half the traction on a B body and a pickup is even worse!!

The big block gen 2 Dak project you might be remembering is one Daryl Alderman started and never finished, but that thing was fully tubbed out.
A big block in a stock rear Dak.......in my opinion (from owning a few big blocks) is a waste of an engine.
If you cant get traction in a Dak with a 408, how in the world do you think another 100+ lbs of tq will help that situation any? And as a few have pointed out.....you now have 80% of all your weight over the front wheels!! Anybody who has any chassis setup time drag racing will tell you that is a no traction setup.

Just my .02, flame away if you must. But dont if youve never owned and driven anything BB Mopars, please.

I have owned plenty of big block mopars, I have even installed a 400 BB in a '75 D100 that had no power steering. And yes that was a horrible thing to drive everyday, but just becouse it was a BB everybody liked. I know that the extra power and torque is just gonna go up in smoke in a pick-up that has the aerodynamics of a brick and I think most of these guys know that too. If they don't, let them find out for themselves, I'm not gonna call them "flamers". I actually think the BB Dakota is a good idea even if it is just for shock value.

with the proper(read $$$) susp. mods, anything can hook up. i have seen plenty of fast trucks. many elcaminos too. traction bars and some mt et's on the track and some bfg drags on the street will work pretty well. i made a bb dart run 1.8 short times with street radials(235/60/14 regul sports) with just a pinion snubber. build the thing and enjoy it. then worry about making it hook. if you wanted a super serious drag machine you wouldnt be lookin' at a truck anyway. build it and have fun.

there wasnt much of the original dak left but the outter body
but it ran a 1/8 mile mud hole in 5 seconds :-O

and there were old chevys with 20"of lift running the smae pit in 14 secs!

i agree with you guys... motor first, traction later.

Right now i have a pretty stout rearend setup that gets the power to the ground. Currently, i am working on putting a 400 big block under the hood of my genIII dakota. Should be a nice long project but i am not gonna try to make it as power full as i can... dont want to be buying new axles and crap all the time.
