Explorer could be a 5.0 (if older) or a 4.6 V8 :-)

Last weekend I went to my friends hosue in Scottsdale where I live way out in the west valley. There were some people hauling a$$ all the way down the 101 and I10. It was great.

Funny thing is a brand new Chevy truck almost a stepside but not sure (kind of nice looking) would take off and I'd catch and pass him easliy. Especially if he hit his 105 MPH limiter and I'd keep going.
There was a newer Ford Sport Trac doing the same stunt manuevers, passing cars and taking off. I'd follow behind each of these vehicles. I'd have to say I DID have a harder time catching up tho the Sport Trac. Unloaded that thing had about my acceleration seeing he weighed less than my QC 4X4. Add a few thousand Lbs onto a trailer and he wouldn't keep up with me :-)

But he did run good going from 70 to 100 MPH bursts, which so does my Dak.

I just got home today from a weekend at the Dunes (Gordens Well) outside Yuma.

There are a few large hills to pull through on the way out there and back and I STILL had to pass people with all this on my Dak!!!

Four ATV's on that 16 ft trailer. Four men in my cab. And the trailer and bed FULL of camping gear, fuel cans, you name it and my Dak STILL would speed up to 80MPH on them large hills when I passed someone going too slow!!!

You sure as hell wont see a Frontier/Tacoma/Ranger doing a job like this very well!!!

This doesn't have anything to do with a Ranger but i raced a 2002 4x4 4.3 L GMC sonoma with my 2004 2x2 3.7 L Dodge Dakota and i smoked him. It wasn't even close. Once i was to 100mph i was at least 35 feet in front of him

The biggest difference in 4.0 rangers is the 4.10 rear end, this is usually only used in 4x4 models but can easily be swapped in to a 2wd. That’s where the gain is, I haven’t raced a v8 Dakota but can honestly say I can stay within two car lengths of a firebird from a dead stop to 70+, the ford is surprisingly fast off the line, if you don’t push it too hard and loose grip (I need a better set of tires to see its full potential). The piston bore on a v8 Dakota is 3.66 with a stroke of 3.40, but the rangers v6 has a 3.953 bore and a 3.61 stroke, that is more in bore and stroke per cylinder + less drag by not having 2 more cylinders like the Dakota = a faster revving engine. The Dakota weighs more as well. I’m not saying the Dakota isn’t a good truck, I totaled mine at 80K so I had to get a cheap truck- 03 ranger edge 4.0L 4x4. I drove the crap out of the Dakota with no complaints but it couldn’t out run a 4.0 ranger. It kinda sucks the Dakota has better lines and aerodynamics, you can feel that if your pushing a head wind in a ford more than a Dakota, but even with a V8 cant out run it. Dodge needs to loose some weight in the frame from what I’ve seen, it’s a lot heavier than the fords. Don’t have to be an expert there, just crawl under both and look for yourself.

I dont know if I entirely agree with this. The way your making it sound, A 4 cyl. engine should beat up on a V6 then?
FWIW, I raced a firebird and stayed door to door with him until we both backed off around 80 mph. Shocked look on his face when he saw me right next to him. And my buddy with his 4.0 ranger 4x4 lost once to me, and he dosnt want a re-match

How is this for a truck and trailer load? In the bed is a 1952 M100 1/4 ton jeep trailer. On the trailer is a 1962 M422A1 Mighty Mite, four ice chests, camping gear for the three of us, three bull elk, gas cans and other crap. She was loaded down. The trip was from Tehachapi, CA to Dolores, CO and back. The M100 and the elk were not in the equation on the trip back there.
