Are the 4.7 cast aluminum pistons that bad for performance upgrades. Why is everyone so afraid of putting nos on them? if i put a small shot ,say under a 100, am i in for instant piston failure? Thanks for your input

The reason why the pistons are weak is because the space between the top ring and the top of the piston is very thin. (To achieve EPA standards) But under a 100 shots of NOS should be fine as long as you don't run the mixture too lean. I'm not sure if replacing the OEM fuel pump to a high volume pump is necessary, but I would do it as a precaution.

the pistons will be fine just keep it under 100 hp shot for safety if your that concerned. I tell you though most stock v8's will take 100 to 125 on stock pistons with out going bang and a v6 will usually take up to 100 hp without exploding and a 4 banger can go about 50 hp but some can even take 75 hp it all depends on how good the stock equipment is and how well you maintain everything. You already have a decent ignition on the 4.7 so swap to a 1 heat range colder plug and run high octane gas and you'll be fine but if it pings at all back out immediately and jet it down a level start small and go up and if you like try and run the fuel jet a slight bit richer for safety if you really want or are that concerned. So you'll run slightly slower on a richer jet but it's better then killing your engine and on a street driven car or truck who cares if you were racing at a track then running the exact jet that the company calls for would be fine but on the street a bit richer won't kill ya. Set the system up to run at full throttle not on a button and i'll tell ya why, at WOT the system is much more willing and able to except the amount of additional air and fuel entering the manifold if you use a button and activate the system at half throttle you increase your chances of detonation due to the mass amount of air and fuel entering the engine and the engine is not as able to compensate for the much flow. A few things to remembe: never activate your system under 3,000 rpm (this is what the NOS tech told me), next tolerate pinging, and never hit the rev limiter or speed limiter when on the bottle ( very bad things happen when you hit rev limiters on NOS it's called mass destruction of your exhaust system but it looks really cool cause you'll shot massive flames out the tailpipe but in turn you'll ruin all your exhaust components)
hope this helps

I do have the NX kit on my 4.7. If you have any questions feel free to email me! Right now I'm running the 100hp shot, and will stay there for playing on the street but MAY try the 150 shot only for a fun time at the track. With the 100 in it dropped my times 1.7 seconds, sure it could be more with some different tires and a better driver(me),have very few runs under my belt.

It is true that most stock pistons are fine for Nitrous. These pistons are different though. The top ring is very close to the surface of the piston making it very weak. Not only that, the piston is already weak due to being cast. Most stock pistons for the cars that are ok with nitrous stock are at least hyperutectic or forged. Most good mechanics dont know much about how this engine is built yet due to being so new. But if you talk to any good mechanic that knows about these engines, he will advise you not to use nitrous on it. You may push the button and enjoy it for a while but premature piston failure is almost certain. Don't forget to say goodbye to that warranty when you take it in with a blown engine and they see that nitrous was used on it. You think a 360 is expensive, wait till you see the price for a 4.7.

My 2 cents.
