I have heard that the cats on Gen I dakotas are very restrictive. I have been thinking about cutting mine totally off. Anyone have any comments or advice.

If your in a state that does'nt require them and your truck is a pre-96(pre-OBDII), Id definately cut it off and not think twice about it. Gutting mine was the most hp producing mod I did until I got to head work. If youre required to have them in your state, I'd definately go with Random Technology's, theirs are the best flowing in the industry.

I would change the stock for a Random Cat. Even if your state doesn't require them, if you go into a state that does, you could get into some trouble. I know Cali is very strict on emissions. Some other states are too. It doesn't matter what your state's law is. You are governed by the laws of any other states you visit. I'm from Kentucky which allows 35% window tint along with light covers, etc. Virgina does not. I know many people who have gotten tickets for light covers and too dark window tint in Virgina. Of course, what do you expect?, Repubs control the state of Virgina..

You can call/email and ask the right model for your dak!

Not cheap, but cheaper than some state's fines..

Thanks guys, I apreciate all of your help. I need to do some engine mods because these non-magnum daks just don't have a ton of HP. And running 31's doesn't help. What other mods could I look into that would gain the most Hp other than the typical supercharger!( might as well buy a 5.2L Mag and install it.) Its probably cheeper.
Thanks.....

Since when can you get a ticket for something that is legal in the state that you're registered in? Thats BS. If anybody actually pays a ticket like that their a fool. You are only obligated to obey the vehicle laws of the state you are registered in.
BTW Im pretty sure you dont need a cat-box for your Dak. Those are for O2 sensors that are after the cat and your early truck should only have one and it should be in front of the cat so you can leave it in and not get any trouble codes.

Its pretty much common sense. If your vehicle had to be fifty state legal to be on national interstates the rules would be the same state to state. The only laws that apply to you are traffic codes for each individual state. You have to follow all posted speed limits and follow all traffic rules for the state you are in, but you do not, do not, have to pass their inspection test which is essentially what you are saying. Im am 100% positive of this and you are the only one I have ever run across who has this idea of otherwise.

Donald-

What does Republicans being elected representatives of Va have anything to do with light covers and window tint? If you are suggesting Republicans impose unfair rules, then I think you have your parties mixed up. The liberal democrat socialist tree-huggers are the ones that imposed all these emissions laws on us with questionable evidence of global warming. They are the ones that ignore the will of the people for their own agendas.

I do know someone that was pulled over for speeding in Virginia, and the cop wanted to give them a hard time of window tint. We are from WV, by the way. Light covers and 35% tint is legal here. I also believe you should only have to obey your state laws. What are you supposed to do, stop at the state line, peel off your tint, go through VA, and pick up your tint on the way back. This is bull crap!!!! The only thing you have to do to go through VA (if you live elsewhere), is remove/ unplug your radar detector.

I'm not saying that it's right or wrong, but it is the state you are in that governs you. True, I have "illegal" window tint and drive through Virginia frequently and I've never gotten a ticket. I think the thing is you have to get stopped for another violation such as Speeding and so on. I know of many people, including one Kentucky State Trooper who have gotten tickets for illegal window tint in Virgina. Anyone who says differently is just plain WRONG!

Are you comparing Window tint to emissions standards? I don't recall the earth being ruined by Window tint...

:)

There are some laws that are enforcable, and some that are not. Whether or not you must have your front license plate is based on the laws of the state in which your vehicle is registered, not where you are pulled over. However, a police officer can ticket you for modifications to your vehicle outside of your home state - anyone who is caught using a radar detector while driving in connecticut or (Virginia/DC? I forget) will receive an enforcable ticket regardless of where you're from... This goes for elements such as window tint and emissions equipment as well.
