I have a 2000 Dakota QC 4x4 with the 5.9L auto and 3.92 LS. Recently (app. 2-3 months) the truck will not shift out of first, into second, without lifting off the gas. This only happens when the gas is to floor: it shifts fine otherwise. It will wind first to the redline, and requires lifting of the gas to shift. If you do not lift, it will hit the rev limiter and start cutting out. I have taken it to the dealer and they said that this is sometimes normal. I think this is a ridiculous answer to the problem. The truck used to shift correctly, and this problem just happened one day. Can anyone please tell me what is wrong and/ or how to fix it?

Beleive it or not, this is normal for a lot of vehicles. I owned several GM cars in the past, and most GM autos would not upshift from low at full throttle.

My Dak does the same thing yours does, except mine has done it since day one. You may be able to adjust the TV cable to get it to work better, but my guess is it won't help, the TV cable does a lot more for downshifts than upshifts. If yours didn't do this until recently, then you should persue getting it fixed. I just thought you would like to know that mine does the same thing.

By the way, no matter what the dealer says, I have found that if there is not a computer code, it is assumed that nothing is broken. Try a different dealer. If that doesn't work, call Chrysler customer service and pitch a fit. THe squeaky wheel usually gets the grease.

Thanks lattimer. I do plan on calling Chrysler about this: I was just hoping someone could shed some light on the problem. I bought this truck to go fast/ race, but this problem really hinders that. You can't win many races by lifting of the gas to let the stupid thing shift. Thanks again!!!

Yep, I have a '97 5.2, does the same thing. Really sucks when trying to get on the freeway and you put it to the floor. Doesn't happen all the time though. I Actually removed the clip from my TB to tranny cable for a while and it helped this problem, however, my downshifts were soft as a babies ass and late as hell.

You might want to check and adjust the gearshift linkage and throttle valve. You might also want to have the line pressures checked and maybe turned up a little.

You should check your TV cable adjustment. It is probably too tight. To adjust, remove the cable from the clip. It should be within 1/4" of the clip or perfectly lined up. If not, hold the cable, lift the locking clip on the mount, and move the cable to adjust to the correct position. Test drive. Good luck. By the way, my 00 RT shifts right at the redline every time.

High line presure can cause this. It's simple higher line presure higher shift point, foam in the fluid will do this as well, you have to use a anti foam or the new fuild(4+ I think).Take it to another dealer.
