Subject: Re-tighten those Headers!!

Message:
I had my Gibson headers installed through the Dodge Dealership last week. I figured they would do a good job. WRONG!!!

Gibson (and others probably) recommends that the header bolts be re-tightened after 100 miles. Since I have driven my truck about 300 miles this week, I decided to do that this AM. WOW some of the hard-to-get-to bolts were barely hand tight!! The bolts that were easily accessible were not as loose but required substantial additional tightening as well. The difficult bolts required hand "open end" wrenching an 1/8 of a turn at a time. The metal, cylinder shaped, "heat shields" around the spark plugs had to be removed in order to get the wrench onto the bolts. Also had to tighten the Y pipe bolts which were loose. A REAL TEDIOUS, KNUCKLE CUTTING JOB.

I figured the Dodge mechanic properly tightened the easy-to-get-at bolts and sluffed off on the difficult ones. Anyway, I got them all tight after about two hours of sweatin my butt off.

Morals of the story:

Do not have Dodge Dealers install custom parts. Their mechanics are trained only to install factory parts. Go to a Good cutom shop or do it yourself.

Be sure to check your header and y pipe bolts fairly soon after initial installation. It is amazing how loose they will be. It's a lot easier to tighten those bolts than to change out the header gaskets.

THE FUN STUFF: I really like the increased performance (I had the headers and an ASP underdrive pulley installed at the same time). Smoother acceleration, increased power! I hope my MPG increases as that is what I told my wife they would do........

Next modification will be a TB. Does anyone know anything about the Holley Twin 52 mm High Flow for the 5.9L? They advertise an increase of 18-23 HP and 23 ft lbs of torque. Sounds good!! Truck Performance has them for $428 with no exchange.

Any other comments regarding good or bad TB experiences for the 5.9L is appreciated.

Thanks
