Its a broken cat...it has ceramic in it and when it breaks, it will rattle worse when cold.

Been there, done that.

no, the car I had, (an Oldsmobile) was about 11 years out of warranty..but the dealer now might as it is part of the emissions system covered by Federal law.
I just happened to see your question and responded, I hope it helps you out. Good luck from a retired Harley mechanic.

Kota on 20s - that rattle has become a very familiar sound to me - I am on my third cat. The dealership should replace it (I think the emissions warranty is 8 years). Thanks to the advice of this board- I was able to determine that my 02 sensors were gone & the fuel ratio was off -thus overheating the cat & shattering the ceramic. Good luck with yours, should get it replaced before your check engine light comes on.

He got up under there after we had taken it down the block and he said to rev it up w/ the clutch in and it still made the rattle but jus faintly then he said to rev the engine with the ckucth in so i did that nothing rattle at all. then he asked does Muy tranny wine I said, "hell yeah" cause it wines real bad. then he said well you have a tranny in the process of going bad. he said it will be sometime b4 you need one prolly 20k miles but I will need one for sure in the near futre Point is make sure you have the right rattle. I thought it was my cat for about 3 months. Hint if your tranny wines it may be the tranny. 97 ,RC, 5.2. 3.90 LSD!! Good luck with the dealer. Mine said as long as it passes emisions it can sound like crap and they won't fix it because it is still functional. Needless to say I go to another dealer for warranty work now. I ended up putting on a performance cat and love it.

My '98 Dak did the same exact thing, and the cat is covered by an 8 years/80,000mi FEDERAL warranty...the dealer MUST replace it. If the ceramic "blocks" the flow of the cat, you may loose power while running down the road and your truck may not go all too well. If this happens, just go hit the cat (careful....HOT!) and shake the ceramic up again.

My advise is to take the cat off and shake out the ceramic and reinstall for a free flowing exhaust system unless you live in Calif.

We have a '97 Dak and our cat has been rattling for nearly two years. When we first brought it to the attention of the dealer, they said it was a loose engine manifold - so they tightened it. We we took it back later, they found the cat had separated inside the manifold and was rattlign around. But now it was past the 80,000 mile warranty (the 100,00 mile warranty does not include emission items). So we're stuck with a rattling cat. No prob they say... as long as it passes smog.

Anyone recommend a good performance cat for a '97 3.9 V6 Dakota???

Depending on where you live, the cat should be covered under the emissions warranty, not the vehicle warranty. Here it is 100,000 kms. They should have to replace it. I am on my third with my 97 Dak.

so after looking at it, what is the easiest way to drop the cat to clean it out? I only see one ubolt before it, near the exhaust manifold, and not anything else until the muffler, any ideas?

The cat and "Y" pipe are welded together in one piece. Cut the pipe as close a possiable to the cat. There will be enough pipe left to install a new cat. I used a 2 1/2" Catco that cost 39.95 plus shipping. At the same time I replaced the muffler with a Hedman Turbo. I didn't gain any thing in the botton end, but to end is much better.

All I needed between the cat and muffler was a section of 2 1/2" pipe with a 1/2 offset. I kept the tailpipe in the orginal location.
