you lose about 20% of power thru the torque converter, plus I think the auto tranny is heavier

Autos are crappy about loosing power compared to manuals. Think of it this way, a manual is straight gear to gear grip. An auto has to turn a converter to force the fluid through several chambers to create power.

My old 79 Cheby started with a Turbo 350 tranny and then had a 400 turbo. I wish I'd kept the 350 because it was more drivable, but the 400 had better towing....so...

Manuals are less power robbing and are just plain more fun to drive...........look at Lambos and Ferrari's they ALL have manuals (the best ones anyway)

Autos have to pump fluid and spin a torque converter full of fluid. It multiplies the torque output of the engine but takes power to drive them.

Look at the old specs of cars like the 340 Duster and compare the std. and autos. They also had to adjust the timing.

When comparing rear wheel dyno numbers between the two transmissions...

If you start out with 250 hp at the flywheel, here's what you get to the rear wheels:

The automatic had a driveline loss of 22% = 195 hp

The manual trans had a driveline loss of 17% = 207.5 hp

I've have had both,if you drive it right (burn that clutch) the 5sp is faster but when you get in the 14's the auto will be more consistant. The 5sp in the dodge truck is a truck trans and does not like to be shifted fast--just ask someone who has poped the pin holding 3-4 to the rail.If I had to pick one in a 4.7 or 3.9 =5sp ; 5.2 or 5.9 auto.I have an auto now and I've never missed a shift with an auto ;-)
