I'm going to build a 1/4 truck for the upcomming TRUCKING NATIONALS and I wonder if you dakota owners had any advice for a good 1/4mile gear that will be decent on gas. Thx

3.90:1 with a decent set of slicks (DOT or Track Only).

Hey Bernd,
What about 4.10 gears. I was thinking about trying a set of 4.10s but am a little concerned about gas mileage.

There really isn't that much of a difference on launched with the 3.90 vs. 4.10, but on the highway there is. (I'm running 4.10's in mine but I also have 32" tires...makes it about a 3.60:1 at the pavement.)

You can run 4.10's with larger slicks....that'll work out rather well.

Cool. I may stick with 3.90s then. I just remember the 4.10s from when I was a kid. If you had 4.10s, you were baaad.

You and me both Wayne. 4.10's were the "Hot Ticket" back then...but we were also limited by the transmission gearing. Now, with the 6-speeds and lower gear/lower ratio automatics, the 3.70-3.90 range works very well at the track.

How do you think those little Jap cars get off the line so quick now a days...low gearing on first and second gear with the average differential ratio being at about 4.20:1 gearing. Combined with a .6x overdrive ratio, they're quick off the line and can save gas on the highway.
