Subject: just received my JBA headers!!!

I just received my JBA headers in the mail today after waiting 2 whole days after ordering them from speedtweaks! I think that's the fastest I've ever gotten any for my truck or even my jeep when I had it. I'm a little disappointed that JBA doesn't have a Y-pipe for my 5.2L 99' dakota 5 speed, but no one seems to have one. I went by my dodge dealer to see about a mopar performance y-pipe yesterday and he said they sell the headers and the y-pipe for $500.00 as a package. That seems a little to cheap for mopar products so I'll have to look into that some more.
Before I get started on the headers tomorrow, I was just wondering what the factory specifications for the nuts and bolts were for the headers. Are they in my dakota manual that came with the truck? I doubt it but maybe I'm wrong.
One other question, there seems to be heat shields on the driver side towards the back and there is a shield going down the whole header on the right side. Do I reinstall these heat shields when I put the new headers on or do I disreguard them and set them aside?
If anyone can help me out with these questions that would be awsome!! I'll let ya'll all know how the headers turn out!!!!!!!!

Regarding the heat shields, just use a pair of pliers, grab hold of the shields, and twist them off. They collect dirt and small rocks which can fall into the combustion chamber and really wreak havoc.

As for the torque specs, 25ft.lbs is factory specs. (That's where JBA wants them at as well.)

The directions JBA supplies (at least they did with mine) are pretty straightforward. One thing that I would strongly recommend is to get some PB Blaster penetrent spray and soak the exhaust manifold bolts at least overnight. Spray them several times overnight and then spray them again just prior to removing them. If they start coming out hard, spray them again. You don't want to snap the studs.

As for the heat shields, don't worry about reinstalling them as they're not needed.

I just had my Gibson Headers installed by the local Goodson Dodge Dealership (Houston, TX). Gibson Headers are supposedly the exact same as JBA. According to a local perfomance shop they are made by the same company. (??)

Anyway, I have only driven back to my office with the original loose parts in the bed of my truck and could not fully "test" the performance difference. I definately can tell a power difference and am anxious to give it a go.

I also had Goodson install an underdrive ASP crankshaft under drive pulley.

I was able to talk to the mechanic who actually installed the parts and he said the headers were difficult to install. The driver's side was especially cramped. He had to use hand wrenches on both sides and was able to turn nuts only 1/8 turn at a time.

He said that the header nuts were torqued to 25 lbs.

The mechanic threw away all the papers that came with my headers and under drive pulley (NICE). I'm going to contact truckperfomance.com and/or Gibson and ASP to get a set of papers for warranty, specifications, etc.

The Dodge dealer charged me @$300 to install the headers. Unless you've got lots of time, the right tools and don't mind permanently greasy nails and cut up hands, it might be worth it???????

I hope the headers perform as good as they look. I got the stainless steel set. They are not shiny but they look COOL.

JBA's are built by JBA (know that one for a fact).

Don't know about the Gibson shorties though...

On the 2945Y, those are for Automatics ONLY. They won't fit on a 5-Speed without some serious re-bending from a muffler shop. (Not worth the effort on cost.)

is there any company that makes a y-pipe for the 5speeds? i heard mopar has one is this true? i hear 8-10 HP is expected from the headers. this dosent seem to be worth the $400-600 price tag IMHO.

Oops. Sorry, didn't know it made a big difference and they didn't specify auto only. Bernd saves the day again.

For those with 5-Speeds:

You've got a BIG advantage over the automatic folks. Our Y-Pipes aren't as crimped (if at all) like the automatic versions.

When I spoke with the JBA techs on a similar post (checked to make sure if the auto Y-Pipe actually fits for a customer) they did state that they had built a set, tested it, and then discontinued it due to the Cost vs. HP factor. (Too much money for no real gains from a 2.5" Y-Pipe for a 5-Speed.) I normally don't say this but I trust their judgement on this one. I've used (and installed) JBA headers since 1989...they know their stuff.

Hey Bernd,

You think I would loose a lot of low-end grunt if I put headers on my truck? I can't remember what you told me a good year ago.
