I'm the owner of a 96 V6 and was thoroughly disgusted to find that you cannot get a GenII kit for anything older than 97. You can get an intake kit from K+N (57-1501) that replaces the stock set-up with a throttle body adapter and chrome top for your now open element filter charger. I installed last night and my fears that there wouldn't be a noticeable difference were eliminated. It offers a slightly more noticeable sound at mid to full throttle and the engine is much more responsive now. So for those concerned that the GenII is the only way to go there is another option for us 96 and older dakota owners (with V6 or V8). Not to mention the cost is half of a GenII kit.

Yep, I got all upset about the same thing also. Until I took the chance, I even built a cold air intake for mine out of PVC pipes and the 97+ air hat. The cold air intake did better from idle to 3000 RPM's while the 14x3 did better from 3000 RPM's and up. It even proves it on Jon Smith's website (www.fast4x4.net)on his dyno charts. I plan on getting the K&N X-Stream lid for my 14" just to take another chance. As for the cold air intake? It's a nice paper weight right now. I do believe that colder air is always better but I love the 14x3's look and sound, it still does an awesome job.
