When the pistons move up and down inside the block, and the valvetrain moves (ie, valves, cams, etc) then a certain amount of pressurization and de-pressurization occurs inside the motor. By relieving this pressure, you achieve more power since the pistons don't have to compress the air any longer. Basically, it just lets the engine "breathe" so to say. Now, do you have to use a hose like that? No way. All you need to do is remove the little hose that goes to your stock air box, and find some way to filter the air that goes into it with the new setup. I've suggested two ways, both work just as well. You can go to the electrical section of Home Depot and find a little fitting that is 90 degrees (right anlge) with a 1/2" barb type fitting on one end (looks like the stub sticking out of your factory airbox that the hose slid onto), and the other has threads and a nut/bushing on it. You can put this into the new intake setup somewhere that is convenient for you, with the threaded part inserted into the tube, and the barbed part exposed to put the little hose onto. The other option is to purchase a "crankcase vent" filter from K&N or similar. I posted the link and a recommendation earlier in one of my posts. Basically, it's just a mini filter, about 2", that you stick into the end of the hose. This is the solution I went with since I had one given to me. But either one will work just fine. I actually purchased the little elbow, but didn't use it. Almost did, if my friend hadn't come by and given the little filter to me, I would have.

Hope this answers your questions.

Bakerman,
I read you message awhile back, and have ordered the same filter you did. I'm having problems finding the Fernco pieces, checked Home Depot online and it not on the web. Will be going to the store later this week. Thanks for a great idea!
Can't wait to see how the truck runs when finished....

I think I'll make my own too, seems pretty easy, but has anyone done this for the 3.9 V6? I imagine its similar to the V8 except the position of the tb hole, on my v6 its to the side, v8 to the front it looks like from your pics. thanks

Ok, Home Depot online just plain sucks. Shopping online, yeah right. But, they've had these parts at every Home Depot I've ever been to, near the pvc/piping area.

moe-Z:

it shouldn't be too hard, the same principal applies. and yes, the tb on the 4.7 is toward the front.

For anyone who's interested, it seems that I'm getting AT Least 1.5 MPG better. I'll always take that. I say at least because I've been driving the piss out of it here lately, just to hear it!

Bakerman - here's a question that just occurred to me... do you live in one of the warmer states? How do you think the pvc would stand up to the extremes in temperatures that we get up here (Ontario). It gets cold enough some winters to freeze water pipes six feet below ground and hot as the Caribbean in the summer. One of the posts warned of cracking and resulting pieces being inhaled into the engine - do you think this is a valid concern? I'm intrigued enough to want to try to build this myself & I've learned enough from reading all the advice on this string to look at the existing stock intake and wonder why my truck hasn't died already from oxygen deprivation. Thanks again for sharing your ideas.

Lesley:
On the PVC being brittle, this is true to an extent. The only time I would be concerned with the PVC being brittle is during extremes. ie, extreme hot or cold while pressurized. Well, the intake is not pressurized, to any sizable extent, so that would alleviate my fears. However, you do live in one COLD spot, so if I were you, I'd just replace the PVC with black plastic ABS. It is slightly lower durometer (not as rigid), but it's more flexible, less brittle, and can handle extreme temperatures slightly better. The water pipes bust because there's frozen water inside of them, which is ALOT of pressure. And I'm not saying that the gentleman that posted that his intake came apart is wrong, but I've never heard of PVC doing that in this type of application. I know guys who run this stuff on turbo setups that run upwards of 30psi with no problems! Would I be concerned? No. And I'm pretty anal (I'm an engineer by trade, it's a requirement). But, being anal, I'd probably use ABS and never have a second thought. I would NOT, however, paint the inside in any way, the cold would most likely cause the piping to contract so much that the paint would peel away and be ingested. Just make sure the inside is clean and free of debri, and you'll be fine.

I was just at Home Depot and found some ABS plastic, I am from Canada so it would suit me better. what are these fernco elbows you talked of? I am under the impression the are rubber and more pliable, somewhat flexible. The only elbows I found were made of ABS as well and did not flex.

they are made by Fernco, and this is the name they are usually referred to. they are usually stocked near the pvc/abs in Home Depot. In white boxes. They are made of rubber, and are extremely pliable, yet stiff enough not to collapse. And very tough. They are used in plumbing alot, that's why they are in the plumbing section. Another individual from Canada wrote me saying that he couldn't find them at Home Depot. Must be something with Canada. Anyway, you can find them at www.fernco.com, the QL300 I believe. It's a qwik elbow, 3" X 3".

Good choice on the ABS, that's what I recommened to the other individual from Canada as well, too cold up there!

I had the same problem here in FL. I check and called every store. Fernco elbows are just not sold or userd here. Don't bother with the Web site
either, they will not sell to the general public. You have to be a business and open a account with them. I can not believe the hassel I've gone through and still can not get these elbows.
I'm going to have to use ABS and rubber connectors.

I was at Canadian Tire & Home Depot today, they both have the Fernco couplings, but the packaging (purple & white boxes) is marked "PlumbQwik". Look closely at the parts and you will see "FERNCO" stamped into the rubber.

I think I mentioned this before. I could not find parts in my area. This is what I found and ordered from EBay. It works fine and it probably is not more than you would all pay for parts. I have been watching this guys auctions and he adds one for auction periodically. I bought mine before this specific chat started so I don't think he copied Bakerman and everyone and their granny have made these for the past year or so anyway.

Guys,

I couldn't find the rubber couplings here in south Jersey either. I gave up, and what I did was use the stock rubber tube to connect to my PVC intake. I used two pieces of pipe (Each about 10") and a 45 degree elbow. THat put the filter right against the opening where the rubber flap used to be. I used plain old PVC, then painted it with an epoxy engine paint. I probably lose a tiny bit of efficiency with the factory rubber hose, but it works well, and I can certainly feel the difference. And the sound at 3000 rpm is real sweet.

dakdak: I'm not saying that isn't a good setup to get from Ebay. it looks fine to me, except for the pcv hose thingy, looks nasty, but that's my opinion. I also like to fiddle with my truck myself. I'm not going to pay someone to make what I can do myself, sorta a pride thing. Like when I get through porting my heads (hehe, didn't tell ya that one), I done it, and I'll be proud of it. But, if anyone feels more comfortable going this way, or they can't find the parts, by all means, DO IT. It won't bother me at all. Only reason I did this was to show others and get some ideas out. I had no idea at all that anyone had done anything like this before I posted. I was just at Home Depot one day, bored watching my wife shop for wallpaper ($35 for a 10' piece of Winne the Pooh border, YIKES!), and came up with this idea, that's all.

moe-z: I'm not sure about the 45's. I have seen them in PVC, but not sure about the fernco's. You can look on www.fernco.com and see if they even make them.

By the way, some folks have asked Home Depot to special order them some fernco products. My local Home Depot said that they could do it if I wanted to pay in advance. Just an option.

Yet another intake scenario....
I've checked out & printed off every homemade intake I can find on the net... priced every component (here in Canada, $15 for elbows, and $90 - yes $90 for the filter) and was about to start building my own - attached to the existing hat as I couldn't find any for the 3.9 that attached like Bakermans and wasn't brave enough to experiment. However... found this on the net last night.

http://www.quickd.com/images/intake.jpg

Is anyone familiar with these? Never heard of them, but for the price, it would save me building my own (although I must say the challenge sounded like fun). What are people using for heat shields? Would aluminum work?
