I was on my way home from work today and it hit me. The 2001 Dak 4.7 is drive by wire!!! You could pre-program the ideal throttle postions for each second of a 1/4 mile race to increase consistency. You could plan all throttel postions for maximum volumetric efficency. You could close the throttel for split seconds on each shift to maintain consistent boost and engine vacum. I was also thinking that it would probably be poss. to open the right combination of trans. selonoids to create something like a trans-brake so you could be at stall speed with out engageing the clutch packs till green light. The possability are almost endless. You could even use it as a trottel stop. You would basicly pull up to the tree and when you hit the last yellow you would hit the red botton and sit back and steer as the computer ran the preprogramed race profile. Even if the vechile was a manual you could still take advantage of temp. closeing throtle for syncromesh. Now if we can just get someone to make a black box that will control the trans, fuel, ign.,boost, NOS and throttle we will be set. Lets start wrighting Motec and Haltech everone. All of the newer vechiles will be drive by wire pretty soon. It only makes sense that someone should start produceing such an item.

Sandman,
You ever hear of a stutterbox? It momentarily shuts the ignition down for a fraction of a second so the you don't breakout of your bracket. Some tracks it is illegal. If you want to see something really interesting, a lil gal here runs a 64 Falcon 4cyl, auto, against rails and beats their butt. She dials in 24.6 sec. and nails it every time.

I got a better idea. You are on the right track (pardon the pun). To get the best volumetric efficiency you would have to vary the intake volume. The way to do this is to have some sort of variable venturi. It could be in the form of one or two spring loaded doors in the intake tract. As the engine needs more air, the shear mass of the incoming air would open the door(s). When the vehicle shifts, the engine speed drops and the air requirments would be less, then the door(s) would close to the required amount of incoming air, THEREFORE keeping up the VE:)
The trial and error part would be the spring tension on the door(s).
Another problem the vacuum signal at the MAP sensor and the ignition requirments.

Why not use a Dual-Overhead Cam, Variable Cam Timing System. Porsche uses one, and so do the Honda VTEC engines. What they have is two coecentric lobes on the valve. When you are going at slow RPM's, the smaller valve opens, saving gas. When you put more throttle into it, the cam a secondary cam lobe nails down the other valve, making it so that more air and gas can come in, giving you the power you need. There is also no delay in timing because it is run directly from the camshafts.

Ferrari also uses a system called Variable Valve Balistics. It is basically the same thing, except they use springs to shoot the valves open, or something like that.

Well I was thinking that if all you need is to use a new harness and PCM then the rest is gravy.I was trying to take advantage of all of the goodies that Dodge has already installed on these trucks. The other ideas like variable intake track pluneum/venturi's, double over head cams and and variable valve timming are all great ideas and much needed! They all would require a large investment in equipment and R&D and any of them by themself would not improve tunning flexability as much as unlimited access to a well designed PCM. I was thinking that it is cheaper and easier to add a black box and harness than anything else. We should lobby Doge to incorperate some of these ideas into a car that the average man can afford. Hey I thought that our 2001 Dak. Have an all electrical system for throttle control. P.S. I am still holding out for a Dodge Neon size car with the 4.7 V8 and the All Wheel Drive system used on the Dodge Dak with a 5 speed trans and posi rear. It would eat most sports cars alive. The price would not need to be any higher then a Dak Quad Cab with AWD.

Dodge could easily build an ass kicking cop car now, they have the drive train technology and parts, all they need is the chassis. I saw a pic of a Santa Monica Dakota R/T cop truck. Why not, they handle like a sports car and have the needed power.
Back in the 80's they built a concept car that looked like an Intrepid with Avenger tail lights, a 3.5 V6 RWD. THAT could have been a start.
