Yep. I knew something like this was gonna happen.

A few weeks ago, I ran outta patience waiting for K&N to bless us 4.7 owners with their FIPK, and I just finished installing a Gibson single-side system (fully welded, I might add... clamps BLOW), so I decided to "Home-Depot" an intake on my own. I used a Powerstack open-end filter and black ABS plumbing, including a port for the PCV hose, as well as a heat-sheild box.

The results?

Loss of torque and more noise than a 747 with anything more than half-throttle. I tried to get used to it, but I found that I wouldn't drive as enthusiastically anymore, cuz the open-throttle roar was drawing WAY too much attention.

This morning, I thought I'd try a "half" intake instead (using the stock air-hat), so while I waited for the epoxy to set on the PCV fitting, I put the factory intake back on, and .... no joke .... the power was BACK.

It definately is NOT a lack of flow... this thing is gettin' a LOT of air.

I must've had it wrong all this time. Wouldn't considerably more intake air-flow create more torque? I love the new exhaust sound, and I was sure that the exhaust - if anything - would rob me of a little TQ, but there's no mistaking the feeling that I got when I put the stock intake system back on (with the new exhaust): my power's back! If the "half" system does the same thing as the full system did, you might be reading :

I did kinda the opposite of you. I kept my stock air box, put in a Drop in K&N filter, took off the snorkle, cut 2 large holes on both sides and 1 in the rear (opposite where the snorkle goes), kept the stock flex hose and put on a $10 rubber 3 inch 90 on the TB in place of the stock air hat. Connected the 90 to the stock flex hose with a (approx) 4inch long piece of 3 inch pvc. I can feel a good bit more power now. Nothing lost off the low end at all, and not a lot of noise under the hood. More noise at the exhaust when really on the gas though. Sounds really good. Did the same thing to my wife's 5.2 in her Durango. Same results there. I am very happy with it so far. Keep in mind that both are 4x4's and are used off road and daily driving, not racing.

I can confirm your results Broehem. I did the same thing. Built a "Z" tube outta PVC and used the filter from my IP Stage II intake. Without the factory airhat, serious loss of torque. With the airhat, and my IP intake she's lively again. I just wonder if a true "Z" tube has the same results?

I put on a Z-tube. Ran like S*#! until I reset the PCM. Very noticable power increase after that. I know TQ improved, after the z-tube, because I pull a 4500 lb trailer and was able to pull up some hills without loosing speed like I did before. I went ahead and added a gibson cat back after that, and lost some low end TQ, but I think I am better off over 3200+ RPM. Was warned this might happen by several other posts, but couldn't resist the sound thing.

Broeheem...glad to see you're still tinkering. I've been wondering what type of homemade intake seems to be working best. Maybe I can help out here.

I finally installed my Gibson catback exhaust last week. Before I installed it, I did a number of runs with my G-Tech. It was 67-68 degrees out, humidity 69%, and had just gotten dark. I have a 2001 QC auto with the 3.55 LSD and about every option you could get. In addition I have a Pace Edwards Rolltop bed cover. First, I did a couple HP runs and came up with an average of 181-182 HP. More importantly though, I did three 0-60 runs. These are probably more accurate indicators of the performance through the revband. The times were 8.15, 8.02, and 7.99. I'm not sure about the first time, I think I didn't get enough wheelspin for a good time, but the other two are very close together and would validate a 0-60 average for my vehicle at 8.00 seconds.

Now after driving it for about a week for the computer to fully adjust I took it out this weekend for some 0-60 runs. Unfortunately, it's been pretty hot in Ohio and my runs were made in 82 humid degrees. I ran the same relatively flat road from both directions and received an average of 7.86 seconds. Taking into account the temperature difference, It appears that the Gibson exhaust will take at least 2 tenths of a second or more off my 0-60 time. (I'm guestimating 3 tenths of a seconds when I run at 68 degrees, but for right now will stick to the conservative estimate above).

I also have a overhead computer that tells me instant mileage and from feel can tell some things are definitely going on:

1. From idle to 1500 rpm the gas mileage seems to improve with the Gibson exhaust. I can also seem to spin the tires a little easier.

2. From 1600 - 1950 rpms the exhaust becomes much louder and I my mileage seems to have dropped. With 3.55 gears this equates to around 55 mph.

3. Around 2000 rpms I am back to making as much torque as I had before the Gibson. Equates to 65 mph.

4. At 2300 rpms I am definitely making more power and getting better MPG according to the trip computer. Equate to 75 mph.

5. After that there's a hard pull to the redline without any letup to the next gear. In fact, the shifts are so much faster that it feels like I've got a shift kit installed on the 1-2 shift.

In summary, apologize for the long response, but it seems that my Gtech and MPG numbers agree with what most people are feeling. I will post my Gtech 0-60 runs in 68 degree weather when mother nature allows. I also have some intake ideas I'll post in another message. Good luck!

Z-tube Rocks!

Ok, I payed the bucks and bought John's Z-Tube and 9 inch Pro-Flow filter...no problem!

Yah, I could have visted Tony Stewart's sponser store and brought some PVC tubing and glue (my hat off to you folks who did this with the know-how on building your own!) but I blew some money on the stock Intense Performance Z-tube setup with their new 9 inch Pro-Flow Filter, and I'm one happy truck exploiter!

No second thought! Gain of power, and I love the sound...now wondering if I should have waited for the new Flowmetrics TB and custom 4 inch Z-tube (kind of a moot point since I just did a Pay Pal thing for the TB and IAT adjustor (sans the custom Z-tube))..oh well, $600 incoming from the tax credit...a little for the truck, some for the wife (god, I'll never get used to different nail polish colors every week...at least my truck stays the same color!)

BTW, I dusted a stock F-150 today, poor sucker didn't know what was coming!

I own a 2000 Dakota CC Sport 4x4 w/ the 4.7L, auto, 3.55s, and 31" tires. I have the Z-tube w/9" power stack and Gibson swept side cat back.
I love the intake roar and exhaust note. I'd like to know how much hp/tq my 4.7L is producing at the rear wheels, and what does that work out to at the flywheel?!

Also, I'd like to upgrade the throttle body. Any suggestions?
