I've got a 2000 Dakota sport with a 3.9 and an automatic

I was wondering if anyone knew where the governor kicks in on this truck? I'm not brave enough to risk a speeding ticket to find out. I've been down that road before.

Not that I bought the truck for speed (obviously, it's a v6) I'm just curious. A friend of mine has a 2001 S-10 4.3 and his governor is set at 95.

I have a '97 Dakota, 2wd, 3.9, 5 speed, 17 in r/t rims and 275/40/17 tires, so my speedo is off just a frog hair, but mine usually kicks in (according to the speedo) at 112, so it sounds like 115 is about right. Aaron

rev limiter should be set about 5200 rpm. depending what gears and size tires you got. i haven't tried my '00 QC 3.9 5spd w/ 3.55 gears yet. i guess anywhere from 95 to 115.

on 2000 and up dakotas V8, i got a 4.7 the govoner speed is 97 mph but you can get past that by turning forward the ingnition and it turns off the gagues and radio, turn signals but everything else works. dont worry about messing up the starter because it dosnt start when its in drive. when you let go of it when you pussy out of going really fast the spedo goes up to your auctual speed if under 120 and if above 120 it stays pinned at 120 untill speed goes below it you can guess how much above 120 you were by timing how long it stays pined and count how long it takes to drop below 120

I've driven my Dak to way past 97MPH. I've taken it to damn near 120 but never had the chance to hit the governor which is usually 117 or so for most Chryslers I've driven.

Now I'm more curious. Maybe I'll jack mine up and test it with the wheels off the ground(legally) LOL!

You know. It's funny. But I don't think they put a governer in the 4cyl Daks. I have gotten mine up to 128-130mph, but never noticed anything. I also have an MSD 6AL with it's limiter set at 5500 RPM. That is with the 5 speed, and some mods. But never noticed anything except for some noisy windshield wipers. Oh. Almost forgot. This was obviously going down hill on an open Highway.

Maybe Daimler didn't think you needed a speed limiter, LOL!

Both my 97 318 and 98 318 were goverened at 118mph. Without the governor, in stock form, the top speed is 138 mph. Got that from some website, dunno which gearing that is. Might just be a computer calculation.

ive gotten me 03 dakota 4x4 with the 4.7 and a stick to 105 so far with no problem, i have not gotten a clear enough road to actually find out. But my moms 02 liberty i hit the speed limiter at 114mph, and i was even on a slight down hill and it still would not go any faster, just felt like someone hit the brakes, im not sure but useally speed limitters are done through retarting the timming. I could be wrong tho

uhhhh you all need to reset your speedo cause from 97-2000 the top speed limiter (not the rev limiter)is set at 110 exactly, you can however reprogram the computer to eliminate this. These v6 dakotas are pretty raw for a v6, and your friend with the 4.3 s10, you should eat him up and crap him out

The reason the quad cabs are governed lower is to protect their different driveshafts.

I got my v6 3.9l quad cab 2wd up to 180 Km/pH so
whatever the conversion is in m/pH. That dakota is
a 2wd v6 so I imagine that the v8 should have a
similar governor.

I have a 2000 QC 3.9L 2wd Dakota. I've held it at 115 mph for
a good 20 seconds or so, but I'm not sure if a governor kicked
in or if the engine couldn't push it any further. My friend also
owns a 2001 QC 4.7 2wd Dakota that has a fuel cut-off at 100
mph
