Subject: Low end torque?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi I've replaced both the cat and muffler with high flo pro performance muffler and cat on my 97 3.9. Everything works great ounce you get the RPMs up but it seems to have lost some low end torque. I was wondering whats the easiest way to get some low end torque back.
Thanks

Without messing with the engine the two things that quickly come to mind are to change back to the factory exhaust or maybe go to a little deeper gear if you were serious. Increasing HP usually leads to a decrease in torque and vice-versa. It's the nature of the game.

have you reset the computer???? or better yet use a mopar performance computer.Low end torque can be regained by installing an intake system like the K&N kit( tube and air filter), throttle body(not a big one but a modified one, this makes the air move faster with the same size throttle blades and will help bottom end as well as top end hp),the E.F.I. in your truck loves extra intake air, wires and coil will also help.Going to the exhaust to gain power is reverse-engineering volumetric efficency and will always lower bottom end torque in some casses you may run a lower 0-60 after a mod such as yours. If you want bottom stay away from headers!!! you need some back pressure or the computer will adjust the power away because of the unburned fuel that runs out the exhaust valve during the lap when both valves are open......

you could simple install a Throttle body spacer
that will increase air flow and thus low end
torque.
Airaid makes one that swirls the in coming air
almost to the combustion chamber, called the
"Power aid" TB spacer,( poweraid.com )

hey rob bolt on a god set of headers put a v8 throttle body on it a set of autolite 3923 spark plugs a brass post distributor cap and a good set of plug wires like taylor msd etc and also put a 180 thermostat in and a mopar pcm and it will pic up quite a bit the headers will make it easier for it to exhale and the pcm will not take away your hp gain oh and put a intens performance intake on it so it can inhale a lot easier also with these changes your truck will pick up considerable and later on put a good set of gears and a sure grip in the back of it and youll be set

NO THROTTLE BODY SPACER. Dynos show no gain. waste of $. Swirling air decreases volume that a given diameter vessel can carry. You have more "felt" torque on low end because it is robbing you of flow. Common known mechanical principle taught in colleges - more swirl or tumble within the object carring a liquid or gas will cause a loss in flow. This has been covered in this forum and others many times. Some say it works on the 4.7 but have yet to prove it on anything but a butt dyno (which is effected by marketing ploys).

Wayne I would love to see some dyno sheets if you have some.
Thanks
