For those who have the A-500, how do you like it? I still getting use to the Mopar world (coming from the GM side) and need to replace the tranny within the next 12 months (plenty of time to save). I've heard good things about Jet tranny's, but I was wanting personal accounts.

My other option is to swap over to a 5spd. I would rather do that, but I don't know how much it would be...i.e.... The tranny itself, clutch res., pedal remounting, etc.

Any ideas?

Boomer

The early A-500's had some problems. Multiple updates were made in 1993 (42RH) when the small rear drive trans family changed from a slotted torque convertor hub to a double D-drive hub (Ford style). This changed the transmission pump (with other improvements) to match. other changes included better fluid flow to the OD unit. The new style hub is definetly a better set-up if you want to run a lock-up convertor.
I have seen multiple slotted Lock-up TC hub failures on the small rwd trans going all the way back to '76.

I have a A-500 trans in my 1991 Club Cab. It has a built 318 that has aluminum heads and intake with a 750 carb. My stock (rebuilt trans) gave out the first time i took it to the track. I bought a A-500 street and strip trans from Pheonix Transmission. It was about $1600 with a 2800 stall converter, which is not that bad of a price. I have been running it for about 4 months now and have been putting a 125 shot of Nitrous through the motor. I have made about 25 runs on the nitrous. The trans is doing just fine. Hope this helps you out.
Mike

My 97 will soon be a weekend off roader/ long haul trailer puller (4500lbs). That is provided I get my newly purchased 89 Toyota beater running. I'm looking more for a daily driver perspective rather than strip. I really don't wanna drag a 4x4, eventhough I'll be supercharging it next summer (maybe).

Hey Boomer,
Mine is a stock A-500 (904 with o/d). I kinda like it except for the shift, it shift likes a chev, too slow going in to the next gear unless your foot is into it. I like a firm shift even when driving around town.
I'd say go to a boneyard and look for one there. It looks like a 904, as opposed to a 727, with an o/d attached. Then shiftkit it.
I'm just going to shiftkit mine and I should be happy. They say TRANS GO is the way to go.
